When I Look To The Sky [JAG]

Oct 24, 2006 23:16

Somewhat of a stream-of-consciousness sort of thing. Set during Adrift, which I'm sure everyone knows by now but if you don't, and don't want to know, turn back now.
With thanks to delgaserasca for her input and beta reading skills. Also thanks to eternal_dreams2 who boosts the ego greatly with her over-excitedness whenver 'fanfic' is mentioned.
I own... nothing. The lyrics are from When I Look To The Sky by Train; the characters belong to Bellisario.

WHEN I LOOK TO THE SKY.
---
And as I float along this ocean, I can feel you like a notion that won't seem to let me go
‘Cause when I look to the sky, something tells me you're here with me - and you make
Everything all right; when I feel like I'm lost, something tells me you're here with me -
And I can always find my way when you are here.
---

It’s so cold, cold and dark; cold and dark and wet and- you’re in the ocean. And the waves crashing around your ears are threatening to suck you beneath the surface with every crash. What happened to the plane? Did it fall, too? Do they self-destruct once the pilot has ejected? Wait- screw the plane, what about your RIO? She had to have ejected too - right? One more minute - was your RIO female anyway? Yes, yes - Skates. Oh, God, Skates.

What about Mac? Isn’t she waiting for you on board? Or - oh, shit - she’s getting married tomorrow (oh, holy Jesus, she’ll become a Brumby). You’re supposed to be at her rehearsal dinner and - well, damn if you haven’t just alienated yourself from your gir-best friend, best friend! She’s only your girlfriend in your dreams and this is no time for dreaming. But God, please say this is just one crazy-ass dream.

You’re dreaming. That has to be the explanation - you’re in the ocean in the craziest storm you’ve seen in a long time, you can’t remember what happens to a plane when you eject and - oh, her voice. Sweet and soothing and - oh, wait, she sounds upset. And a little angry, come to think of it. But she’s persistent - Mac would never give up on anyone. She’s insisting you’re not dead. Cool your damn jets (if you get any cooler you’ll be somewhere beyond the realms of hypothermic and hurtling towards freezing) - missing? Dead? That’s impossible.

But there are white lights, and a strange noise (that sounds suspiciously like a helo) - oh, shit. You dropped your plane in the drink, didn’t you? You’re yelling as loud as you can (but did you lose your hearing? Because you can’t hear yourself) and-

Skates, oh thank God - but you can’t feel your arms, your legs - your entire body’s numb and there are machines and-

Some blonde woman is hovering. For once, you’re not thankful for the attention - you don’t recognise the face, though she insists you’ve been sharing a bed for the past God-knows-how-long. Then there’s a familiar face at the door, a familiar voice - sweet and soothing and - it’s music to your ears. Oh, Mac. Silently, you give her your thanks (and silently, she smiles widely - like she couldn’t be happier).

---
And when I feel like there is no one that will ever know me, there you are to show me:
When I look to the sky, something tells me you're here with me - and you make
Everything all right
---
