The Scene: Bladerunners Ice Rink in Bethel Park. Its South Hills Panthers vs. Altoona Trackers, Squirt age group, level B.
Yesterday, at 47 seconds into the game, the hockey puck was fed to Matthew in front of the other team's net and he rifled it into the net for the first goal of the game.
OH MY FUCKING GAWD
I pounded the glass so damn hard that I thought it would break. There could not have been a more proud father than me at that point in time. For home ice hockey games for Matthew's team, I run the time clock. He skated right over to me with the biggest smile on his face and shook his fists in the air, celebrating his first goal of the season.
That and the fact that I now owed him. ha ha ha. See, I told him that if he scored a goal, I'd buy him a video game. If he got a hat trick, I'd buy him computer hardware.
Funny thing, though, is that I already bought him a buttload of PC hardware: new vid card, RAM, wireless card, soundcard, monitor and keyboard. We did all this so he could play Warcraft with me. Fucked up thing now is that his CPU isn't good enough so the video is choppy as fuck. I know after the first of the year I'm going to upgrade that too. Sigh. The PC upgrade game is never done.
Just before the game, though, I did look at him and say "Fight for the puck. Play hard. Have fun.". He did all three of those. I've never seen him work so hard. The look of true joy on a child's face is angelic.
His team scored 7 goals, but that wasn't enough for a win. They tied this team, 7-7. The goaltender on Matthew's team is a great kid and blocks the shots that no one else in their skill level can block. However, he goes down quicker than a french/italian/english/asian/spanish/latin/russian whore/wife/girlfriend/mistress and most teams realize that in the first period and just flip it over his shoulder for the rest of the game. He's a great kid, though. I'm not talking smack on him. I'm just pointing out that Matthew's team hasn't won because they need to score 7+ goals each game and that doesn't happen on Matthew's team this year. heh.
