I'm burning a mix for James. James is a member of the Sudanese family that The Lost Boys of Sudan assigned to Citizens of the World to tutor and assist in general acclimation to American culture. Hence the mix. Tell me this isn't a kick ass introduction to American (okay, and British...) music:
1. Daft Punk - “Homework”
2. Bloc Party - “She’s Hearing Voices”
3. The Game - “Hate it or Love it”
4. The Beach Boys - “Help Me, Rhonda”
5. The Arcade Fire - “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)”
6. The Beatles - “Come Together”
7. Cake - “Frank Sinatra”
8. Common - “Chi City”
9. The Features - “The Way it’s Meant to Be”
10. Tapes ‘n Tapes - “Omaha”
11. Daft Punk - “Phoenix”
12. Dizzee Rascal - “Stand Up Tall”
13. Girl Talk - “Bounce That”
14. The Go! Team - “Huddle Formation”
15. Interpol - “PDA”
16. Kanye West - “Heard ‘Em Say”
17. Nirvana - “Breed”
18. TV on the Radio - “Dirty Whirl”
19. The Unicorns - “Tuff Ghost”
20. Imogen Heap - “Hide and Seek”
I tried to focus on things with big beats since I got the feeling (mostly from the way he dressed - I'm a horrible person, I know) he's into hip-hop. But I also know that hip-hop has been incredibly successful abroad. These songs should all be brand new to him. The only ones I'm curious about are "Come Together" and "Heard 'Em Say." Unfortunately, I missed tutoring last week because I was violently spewing my internal organs everywhere. It was hard to tell from our first meeting exactly how much English James can actually read. The tracklist might be superfluous. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Hopefully, even if he can't read it very well tomorrow, he'll be able to soon.
Hope things are well with you all.
