GROCERY WITCH! GROCERY WITCH!

Oct 29, 2010 00:23

Just got back from RiffTrax Live: House on Haunted Hill. Fucking hilarious. For those not in the know, RiffTrax is from the creators of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett) and basically follows the same concept MST3K did: making fun of movies. They did a live show a couple months back to Reefer Madness and for Halloween they did House on Haunted Hill. Here's hoping they do another one soon. I was laughing so hard I cried. ALRIGHT GAMING MEME TIME!

I'm going to go ahead and cheat a bit here and actually bring up two games because I couldn't decide which one I actually wanted to go with.

KILLER7 - GC - 2005

Killer7 is one of, if not the most, underrated game of the last gen. Not everyone really "got" Killer7. It's understandable, I guess, Killer7 isn't a very easy game to "get". I mean, you moved your character with the A button of all things. Killer7 is a game from the mind of Suda 51, the creator of the popular No More Heroes series on the Wii. It's a game about a group of seven assassins, known as the Killer7, who are hired to take out a terrorist organization known as Heaven Smile, a group of crazy suicide bombers that look like monsters that laugh before they blow up. But the Killer7 are no ordinary group of assassins--they are all one man--a wheelchair bound senior known as Harman Smith who is able to call forth different "personalities" and use their special abilities. Oh, and you receive hints and help from a naked red man in S&M gear, a ghost named Travis who apparently you killed, and a dismembered head of a young woman. To explain it any further would be both treading in spoiler territory and would be far too confusing to try to summarize.

I actually didn't pick up Killer7 until about a year after it had already been released. It had always interested me but I kind of just forgot in existed. But then one night I was watching G4 at 3:00am, back when they actually had shows about video games, when Cinematech came on and featured gameplay footage from Killer7. It was mind melting insanity and when it was done I knew "holy crap, I have to get this game". The next day I went to GameStop and found it brand new for a mere $10. My only regret was not buying this wonderful game sooner. With an insane story, incredible cutscenes, a fantastic soundtrack, and some of the best voice acting I've ever heard, Killer7 is easily one of my favorite games of last gen. Needless to say, Killer7 was a bomb in sales. Do yourself a favor and buy Killer7. It was also released on the PS2 and these days can be found for dirt cheap. Whether you like it or hate it and I can guarantee you one thing: it's a game you're never going to forget.

AND NOW GAME NUMBER TWO!

DEADLY PREMONITION - 360 - 2010

Deadly Premonition is an amazing game. Fuck the haters. Fuck IGN. Deadly Premonition is not only one of my favorite 360 games to come out this past year, it's one of my favorite 360 games period. Yes, Deadly Premonition has a lot working against it. The controls feel very dated and the combat is far from perfect (but hey, it's a lot better than it was in that piece of shit Saw game). The graphics also aren't up to snuff with what a lot of gamers are used to in this day and age. If this were any other game I'd probably write it off as a waste of your time but not Deadly Premonition. This Twin Peaks-inspired, open world, survival horror game somehow transcends everything it has working against it to make it one of the most unforgettable and enjoyable gaming experiences ever. And not even in a "it's so bad it's good" way. Deadly Premonition is just a really good game.

Its flaws are often exaggerated too. The controls are bit wonky, but they aren't hard to get used to. Despite what people say, the game has far more than three songs that it keeps reusing and the soundtrack is in fact amazing. Even the graphics aren't as bad as people make them out to be--they have their own charm to them. The story is incredibly well done and the characters are unforgettable. Deadly Premonition isn't really a game that can be explained in a few paragraphs, it's a game that you really need to experience on your own. It's not a game for everyone. And it's not a game you can pass judgement on by only playing the first 15 minutes. If you do that you'll walk away thinking the game is a piece of crap. It's a game you really need to sit down and give a chance. The game is only $20, brand new, and offers over 20-hours of gameplay (and that's if you ignore the tons of sidequests). I gladly would have spent $60 on this game. That's how strongly I feel about it.
