Dear Livejournal, the world is turning to a Philip K. Dick novel. Make it stop? Love, Christopher.
So let's see, we have more shady shit with the Bush II-CIA junta courtesy of the Washington Post:
The agency is working to establish procedures in the event a prisoner dies in custody. One proposal circulating among mid-level officers calls for rushing in a CIA pathologist to perform an autopsy and then quickly burning the body, according to two sources. Then, courtesy of Dan, we have this fun little story from Wired magazine about brain implants and mind control. Truthfully I found much of this to be fascinating, and it's hard not to cheer for a guy who just wants to walk again. But never float a good idea past
a group of homicidal maniacs: Cyberkinetics is just one of a dozen labs working on brain-computer interfaces, many of them funded by more than $25 million in grants from the US Department of Defense, which frankly envisions a future of soldier-controlled killer robots. Nice to know our best military minds are those of eight-year-old boys.
Of course, the Washington Post (again) reminds me that the military's smartest people are, in fact, the ones on the ground, in harm's way, pulling the trigger. This kick ass op-ed from a solider terrified of his Commander in Chief hits the nail on the head for me:
"Paranoia," some may say. The only people who need to worry are those with something to hide. This may be true. In fact, being with the president or against him in the war on terrorism may be the current controversy, but I can envision a time when antiabortion groups and churches might fear soldiers attending meetings or services if such groups are labeled "threats" by a subsequent administration. Are they sincere pro-lifers or moles? Perhaps gun owners' groups might feel that soldiers are joining to get access to membership lists or activities if such groups are deemed "dangerous." Is one a Second Amendment defender or domestic spy? I need a day off from work.
