I was never close to Jim Gurbitz, but I liked him. And his girlfriend, later his wife, Tara. Jim was in homeroom with me and also on my Mock Trial team, where he beat me in the spot I wanted: Defending CoCounsel. Jim made me laugh a lot in Mock Trial, and in homeroom, and whenever I was in a class with him. We said hello when we saw each other outside of school, which was seldomly. He was a really bright and funny kid, everyone thought so: he was, I think, voted Most Likely to Succeed when we graduated in June of 1998, having earned a congressional appointment to West Point.
I received a message this morning that he was killed in Iraq on Sunday.
