The table When Blair was 6 years old, her grandmother gave her a white rabbit as a birthday present. Her grandmother Cornelia, her father’s mother, raised rabbits in her country house.
“They say that rabbits aren’t good pets for children under the age of 10,” Cornelia had told Blair. “But I know for a fact that you are much smarter than an average 10 year old. You must always stay calm, quiet and gentle around her.”
Of course, Blair never raised her voice around Snowbell - that’s what she named the rabbit - and treated the little creature as gently as she would treat a delicate flower.
When Serena first saw the rabbit, she squealed because to her the white ball of fur was the cutest thing she had ever seen.
Blair hushed her instantly, with just a stern look.
After that, Serena tried her hardest to be very quiet around the rabbit. She never was a quiet child, so staying quiet for longer than 5 minutes was difficult to her. But since Blair had asked her to be quiet around Snowbell, she did what her best friend asked.
Blair always took the rabbit with her, if she could. But when she went to St. Barts with Serena for a week, she had to leave Snowbell home. It was Dorota’s job to look after the rabbit.
When Blair arrived home, smiley faced and tanned, Eleanor told her that Snowbell had died. Just like that, out of the blue.
Other parents, Blair later thought when she looked at the now empty cage, would have softened the blow somehow. They would have lied. They would have told their 6-year old daughter that they sent the rabbit back to the country.
But not Eleanor.
As soon as Blair told Serena what had happened, the blonde girl rushed over.
Serena wrapped the rabbit into a pillowcase made of Egyptian cotton, and placed her into a shoe box - a Manolo Blahnik’s box because according to Blair Snowball deserved only the best - which she tied with a black ribbon.
They go to Central Park where Serena found a nice quiet spot, with a little bush, and they decide to bury Snowball under the bush.
With two yellow plastic shovels that Serena brought with them, together they dug a little grave.
As a finishing touch, Serena made a small cross out of two sticks she took from the bush.
They sat there, looking at the grave for over an hour. Serena held Blair, as the slightly smaller girl cried.
A few weeks later Serena arrives in Blair’s apartment with a surprise. A white kitten. “Look what I got you.” Serena jumped into the bed with Blair and gave the brunette one of her trademark smiles. “Her name’s Kitty Minky. And she’s yours, if you want her.”
Blair looks at her best friend and the gorgeous kitten in her hands. She smiles and hugs Serena with all her might. “Of course I want her. You gave her to me.”
Serena puts the kitten onto the bed and hugs her best friend back. “And you know what the best part about having a cat is? It won’t bother her I squeal or yell or something like that.”
