So there's been a lot of positive press surrounding what's been going on at Pitzer with this kid who's trying to start a "Masculinist Coalition" club and this is all I can think to do right now to try and get some word out there about what is so bad and awful about this club. Yes, of course, its OK for men to engage in these stereotypical activities, ie, drinkin beers, watching sports, playing video games.. what you will.. men everyone do this all the time, everywhere.
This becomes a problem for gender equality when these activities become the definition of ones masculine identity. Saying that these activities belong to heterosexual men, is saying that when women choose to participate, they become less feminine. It also says that gay men that participate, they can only do so in a man's hat, forgoing their homosexual identity. Thus, they remain closeted (sp?). A straight man whom might not want to participate in these activities is thus made feminine or homosexual. Point in case, look at all the derogatory epithets out there to describe these people (you know them, I dont need to list them here).
I am all for drinking beer (except no crappy tasteless lite beer please). I am all about playing sports (I played basketball in high school). I am all for watching sports (Lets go Red Sox!). Ok personally, not really into playing video games, but that is mostly because in middle school I played spyro the dragon until my whole body hurt.. wasn't so nice.. but hey, a lot of my friends play video games, and I support that.
All these things are about one's personal identity, so stop making the declaration that they belong to masculine identity.
I've thought about this a lot and I wonder if there are people out there whom disagree. Sure, most people might say, whatever its joke. Yah, its a joke, but not a funny one to me. Give me another reason why I should look from a different perspective.
Peace
