bert was a fabulous character. his cap lined in stained red fabric [like a crumpled flower rotting in the sun]. and the brilliant glint in his eye seen sparkling through the soot. a gentleman of all sorts, charming yet defiant. marvelous!
mary poppins was the "magical" character of the story, with her infinite bag of clotheshangers and mirrors and other brikabrack. upon closer examination, however, it has become clear to me that bert is the more peculiar of the two.
perhaps this can be attributed in part to dick van dyke. quite possibly my favorite actor. in the ending credits. the name of the actor who plays the old bank president rearranges itself from .... something... to dick van dyke. brilliant!
