In her dreams, it was horses who chased her.

They were huge and black, with their nostrils flaring and foam at their mouths. Their hooves crushed everything in their path; they wanted to crush her too. Samara ran quietly, as quietly as she could with the branches catching at her skin. Nothing hurt, and that was the scariest part. Her skin was thin like paper and bled easily and it didn't hurt.

When she couldn't run anymore the well loomed up in front of her, and she stopped.

There was a baby crying and a phone ringing, and she put her hands over her ears. But it didn't stop. It would never, ever stop. It would go on forever and ever.

"Shhh," said her mother.

"Shhh," said Jane who was also Anna, and rocked the baby.

The sun lit up the trees and then it crashed behind a hill. Behind her, there was only one horse and it reared up. She couldn't see the face of the man who was riding it. His face was hidden behind black plastic. Strong hands got hold of her and she couldn't get away, and the well was open.

Jane/Anna was crying and rocking the baby, and the world was spinning around. Her mother brushed out her long hair at a mirror.

"Anna," she screamed. "ANNA!"
