link color

ok, ive tried to fix this problem, but i cant. my links are blue and purple. i've changed the colors in the look and feel portion of the costumize page, and i took out all the extra style tags. when i tried to change the link color by using a < font color="" > tag, it didnt turn the links any color, and turned the text surrounding the links green. please help, i dont know what im doing wrong.
