I may be going to Italy (Rome, I believe) this year, and I'd like to be as prepared as possible (short of learning Italian and being able to chronicle the entire rise and fall of the Roman empire). Are there any books on history/language/geography/art or anything of the like that you found especially helpful?

Thank you for any help. :)

My sister used Froders or something along those lines, it was all around helpful. I don't know much about Rome, but if you're there for awhile there are definitely some places you HAVE to go. How long are you there?

Frommer's I think? I was glancing through several travel guides yesterday, but became overwhelmed and figured I'd just ask someone. I'm not sure how long we'll be there yet. A friend of mine has offered to take me, so I imagine it will be maybe a week long trip? We're still figuring it out, so any must-see places can go on the list of destinations to construct the trip around.
