Ok, so you'd think that when a big site like Ninemsn.com writes a series of short articles on one subject they would include the writers name and maybe somewhere on the site they'd include an email address at which to contact ninemsn at to give feedback to the crap that site writes.
Well obviously they are too good to have the general public contact them correcting they're articles and telling them how much we hate them.
Dear Ninemsn.com,
I am writing in regards to the series of articles posted as "Finding Emo" on your site. Entertaining. I don't think i have read an article that managed to make me hate the emo movement more since reading the ramblings of a certain friend of mine on Livejournal.
One problem, your research was inadequate. It was good that you guys managed to link the current emo movement to Fugazi and make it appear that you knew what you were talking about, but you wrecked it all when you put Rise Against and The Dresden Dolls in the "Emo Boy Band" section. For shame. Rise Against are as emo as a buzz cut and leather shoes! They would be what most of us would consider to be Political Punk, or as close enough to it as one could get in the age of poser bands such as Greenday. They could be grouped with bands such as Anti Flag and Bad Religion whom would ram their guitars up the rears of anyone who dared call them 'emo'. And the Dresden Dolls, wow, i can't believe i'm defendingthem, but no, no, no and no! Panic! At the Disco and My Chemical Romance may be including cabaret in their sets and songs to add a bouncier feel to their 'oh so powerful and deep dark music' (note the sarcasm in that one) but i do have to say the Dresden Dolls did it first and they do it a hell of alot better and with no "i'm such a sad little boy who's parent's don't like me" chip on their shoulders.
Second problem, "Emo is a tougher Goth". What thirteen year old nobody did you ask to write that one down on your information notepad?! Read and learn, Goth is a tougher Emo. Trent Reznor, Frontman for Nine Inch Nails and God to Goths everywhere would be able to kick the arse of Gerard Way, Brendon Urie and Bert McCracken (Frontman for The Used, an emo band before emo was popular which you left out of your list!). Emo as a fashion statement and a 'scene' is more for the kids who want to be 'different' from the norm but don;t want to be as different as the Goth, they don't want the stigma that comes with it. They just settle on something that is easier for the teachers and parents to swallow, no spikes, no bats, no chunky boots, just mainstream General Pants Co type clothing but still with that Goth make up kind of 'edge'.
Now if those two points weren't bad enough, there is always the question we all ask when we read your article, "Where in the sweet name of Jesus is Chris Carabba in all of this?" If you missed him in your research, he was the frontman for Further Seems Forever who left to play songs about his ex girlfriends, his lack of luck i love and other 'feel sorry for me' kind of themes on an accoustic guitar to millions of crying and screaming girls around the world. This man is the epitomy of the 'Emo' movement! He is a good looking man (ok, maybe except the ferret on your face eyebrows), sings about his emotions, wears tightish clothes and always has that puppy dog eye look in all of his promo shots, all of his videos and probably every minute of the day when he looks at anyone. He was emo when emo was still guys wearing button up shirts with tight jeans, when Emo was still called the "Post Hardcore" movement, when it wasn't a damn fashion parade for kids who think they are better than me just because their parents will fork out $400 for a Toni & Guy style cut and color that looksw almost ridiculous and inpractical anyway! Dammit!
I think thats all i really have to say, i think your article was somewhat amusing but lacking in correct information, it would have been better if the distinction between the emo music scene and the emo fashion scene was made. Maybe make a note on how bands such as My Chemical Romance used to be credible and then suddenly overhauled their image to cater to the thirteen year old market and make more money when they heard that acting like a f- head with no control over his face was the go. Maybe next time write about Pete Wentz the controversy of him getting his dick out for thirteen year old girls for publicity... well it didn't start off that way but thats why he gets it out now. Maybe thats why The Used aren't around anymore, Bert doesn't look emo, so the girls don't like him anymore, the boys don't look up to him anymore, they don't want to support them because The Used aren't releasing their own line of "Action Figures".
Oh God, i need a stiff drink. This damn emo crap has made me alittle too angry. Yes, Emo makes me angry. You Ninemsn also make me angry. Incorrect information makes me angry.
Goodbye.
Maria.
I really do need a stiff drink right about now. I swear sometimes i think they hire a monkey to do all their writing for them.
