Disclaimer: This isn't real life... at all.

The idea for this came to me after listening to Andy Skib sing "Blackbird" on repeat over and over again. I also listened to "Running" by Kris Allen and "You Can" by the oh so wonderful David Archuleta.

The first thing Cook noticed about Archie was his eyes and how they were hazel and green and all kinds of beautiful. And Cook is pretty sure that this makes him a sap, but he realized early on that anything involving Archie made him pretty sappy, and Archie sortofkindofreally does have him wrapped around his little finger.

They met in the doctor's office of all places. Cook was pretty much forced to sit down next to the kid because the only other seat left was beside a man who sounded like he'd recently contracted the black plague. So he'd taken a seat next to this really good-looking kid with the gorgeous eyes, and he'd tried not to be a creep as he worked on his crossword puzzle.

====

After guessing and erasing 15 down (nutty member of the rose family) multiple times, he sighed in annoyance and was kind of surprised when the kid grabbed his pencil and wrote in almond, and Cook couldn't help but laugh at the bashful look on his face after he'd finished writing. He figured now was as good a time as any to introduce himself.

"Hey, I'm David. Thanks for that answer." The boy kind of nodded and shook his head. He pulled out a notebook and scribbled out, I'm David too! People usually call me Archie though :). And Cook didn't know what surprised him more: the fact that they shared the same first name, or the fact that he found it absolutely adorable that David actually drew out a smiley face.

Cook stated, "Well, just to be fair, you can call me Cook. Care to help me with some more of these answers?" So Cook waited for an answer and kind of asked again. Then he noticed that Archie was looking away, and how did he not notice all this time that the kid was deaf and had those crazy implant things**, which Cook only knows about because of that one random night spent watching the Discovery Health Channel.

So he tapped on Archie's shoulder and asked again, and Archie nodded and gave Cook his already trademark smile, and Cook noticed that he was obviously smitten with this Archie kid, which is kind of weird since the kid only looked 18 or something, but Cook chalked it up to being kindred spirits or something (and since when did Cook freaking quote Anne of Green Gables?).

====

Over the course of an hour, which includes 1 entire puzzle, several pages of Archie's notebook, and an impromptu sign language lesson, Cook now knows that Archie has been deaf for as long as he can remember, and that he's 20 years old, which is awesome and makes Cook feel like that much less of a creep. Archie was waiting for an appointment with his audiologist, and Archie gets excited in this ridiculous manner and writes a mile a minute that, Today is the day they turn on my implant! And I know that it might not work, but I can't help being excited because it's like... all your life, you've been waiting for this moment to arrive.

And Cook feels this rush of emotions and doesn't want to freak the kid out and cry in his face or something, so he's a little thankful when a nurse comes over to take Archie to his appointment. Then he kind of panics because he does not want this to be the last time he sees Archie. So he does one of the creepiest things he's ever done, and has been trying not to do this entire time, and actually jumps up after the kid.

He grabs Archie's notebook and writes out his number and a note for Archie to text him about how the appointment goes. Archie smiles at the note and kind of waves at Cook as the door to the waiting room shuts. And Cook is still standing there like an idiot in the waiting room full of people, and he's the happiest he's ever been in a while.

====

Cook sits through his routine visit to get his blood pressure checked, and he really has been trying harder to take his meds and eat foods with less sodium, and the doctor may or may not be lecturing him about that, but all he can think about is Archie. Is Archie okay? How is the appointment going? Is he nervous? Did the implant even work? And Cook is already pretty nervous because he went online on his phone and did some more reading about the implants.

The doctor is getting up to leave already and is shaking his hand, and Cook doesn't remember a single thing from the conversation he assumes they've just had. After following the maze of rooms back to the waiting room, Cook looks for Archie and is a little disappointed when he doesn't see him, so Cook decides to sit around and wait because it couldn't hurt (and Archie is his kindred spirit, so he can do whatthefuckever he wants to do, thank you very much).

He stares distractedly at a puzzle for who knows how long and finally feels his phone buzz in his pocket. He fumbles to get it out and reads: Hey Cook, it's Archie. I hope you're still here. My appt is over. Cook's heart is busy attempting to beat itself out of his chest while he rapidly types back to Archie: Of course! I'm back in our spot ~D. Cook stares at the door of the waiting room while he fidgets, and he doesn't really care how many people are staring at him right now.

So before Cook can have the heart attack he's sure he's going to have, Archie walks out of the door, and for the first time today, he can't read his face at all, which freaks him out to no end. Archie opens his notebook to a new page and starts to write and hands the notebook to Cook when he's finished.

Thank you so much for keeping me sane before the appointment, Cook. I've been so nervous, but my mom keeps telling me that "good things come to those who wait," and I've been waiting for so long. Just so you know, I can hear you breathing right now. It's crazy!! There are a bunch of other sounds, and it's really overwhelming because I've never heard them before, but I can kind of pick out the sound of you breathing, and it's really crazy, but I know I already said that before, haha!

So at this point Cook is pretty sure he's crying and being an all-out baby, but he figures the situation warrants it. He grabs onto Archie and hugs him so hard that he's sure he's picked him up off the floor by now. When he lets him down, Archie grabs onto his wrist and pulls him over to an alcove away from the waiting room. He looks Cook in the eyes, and he has this really determined look on his face, and Cook's really not sure what that means.

So this turns into one of those moments that Cook's sure he will remember for the rest of his life. Archie opens his mouth and says Cook's name. And to be honest, it doesn't really sound anything like his name, but it's the best sound he can ever remember hearing. So Cook does the only thing that comes to mind and leans down and kisses Archie, and Cook could care less if you're not supposed to kiss strangers because they are kindred spirits, and that means they are obviously bound together for the rest of their lives.

**I'm referring to cochlear implants. If you don't know what they are, you can go here to find out. I'm a bio major... so I'm a big nerd. I feel like there are so many more directions this story could go, so expect a sequel in the near future. :)
