I love the hustle and bustle of an overpopulated city.
Flew there, shuttled for TWO HOURS from Newark to Manhattan (Quality Hotel, Times Square) and we were greeted by a swell Texan and a senile foreign old man who took on the role of "housekeeping, electrician, and security". He shook our busted TV too much and we double locked the doors when he left.
2am in Times Square - bright lights, amazing McDonalds, Duane Reade Pharmacy, and crazy cops and street guys yelling at us.
8am, April 25th, 2006. The beginning of our 12 hour day full of walking, sight-seeing, and video diaries. Times Square to the most southern part of Manhattan Island. Madison Square Garden, Union Square, Parsons School of Design, NYU, Spring Street, Prince Street, CANAL Street, China Town, City Hall, World Trade Centre Site, Wall Street, and the Statue of Liberty (from afar) - we did it all in that order. Starbucks, McDonalds, "Jana" Water, and food from the World Cafe tasted insanely good. Ev and I managed to walk all the way to the end of the island AND struggled our way back up to Wet Seal, Shoe Mania, Forever 21, the Empire State Building, and Macy's. We ended the day with overpriced meals from TGIFriday's and knocked out while elevating our feet to VH1's "Weirdest Families".
7am, April 26th, 2006. Rockefeller Centre and the Museum of Modern Art were scratched off the list, after an embarrassing trip to Dunkin' Donuts where neither of us realized that they had no idea what a 'double double' was. I think the girl gagged herself to death with laughter when she came back with my coffee. We conquored the subway system to Canal Street. Hard bargaining and running up and down and in between Broadway, Lafayette, and Centre Street, we left with loads of incredible things.
After grabbing our stuff from the hotel, lost my camera case, missed our shuttle, and I learned to flag down a cab in Times Square. The taxi driver revved it back to Newark where we caught an early flight back to Toronto (about three hours ahead) on a nicer plane. New dance moves were born!
When we got through customs, the lady I got was horrendous. They ended up searching everything I had since I seemed so sketch. No job, in NYC for two days, spent 60 dollars, had a purse in another purse, and a camera with no case...they thought I just didn't declare anything. The girl was more interested in my clothes than anything else, looking at all the tags and knowing where I bought the Aritizia top I packed.
PICTURES AND VIDEOS TO COME. You can check out some pics on my Friendster if you know it (I know I know!). Unfortunately no actual photography this time, only generic looking pics. Maybe I'll save that for another visit.
I got my Digital Impressions Group internship, so I'll be there this summer helping out with the crazy ass events.
Summer 2006 is here, and I'm loving every minute.
