Towards the end of the Gouka trial, Lucifer finds himself gifted with a rare oppertunity to make all his attempts at a coup in mafia leadership plausible. It has been a long three years since he first began to work against his cousin, and while he is not proud of what he is doing, he feels that it is the right thing. For him that makes all the difference. There are only two things left to do. The first is to put his cousin into position. An instant message on MSN messenger is simple enough to accomplish this.
Lux says: Hey. We need to talk.
Tony Stark says: Eh? Fine. What is it?
Lux says: Two things really. A) Sorry for that clusterfuck at the speakeasy. I went over my bounds, and said some really unnessecary things. I was just pissed and hate being out of the loop with these sorts of things. B) I think I've found a solution to our lack of corn based liquor. But you're not gonna like it.
Tony Stark says: Whatever, it's fine. No hard feelings. Oh? What's that?
Lux says: You remember Obidah Stane? The underboss in NYC who you put a hit on two years ago and still isn't dead?
Tony Stark says: ...yeah, I remember. What about him?
Lux says: Guess who I'm on the phone with.
Tony Stark says: You're kidding.
Tony Stark says: He's the solution?
Lux says: He's offering to help, on certain conditions, yeah.
Tony Stark says: Ugh. Just tell me what he wants.
Lux says: Well. I would if he would tell me. I'm assuming having the hit lifted is one of them.
Lux says: Says he'll only disclose full information if you meet him in neutral territory.
Tony Stark says: Hm.
Lux says: I'm only relaying the info right now. He says he's in the area on business anyway and "heard about our little incident."
Tony Stark says: I'm sure he did.
Tony Stark says: Ask if he wants a specific time.
Lux says: Anytime after 9 at night, apparently.
Tony Stark says: Hm. Tell him I'm willing to meet him at 10 at the harbor, two days from now.
Lux says: Okay, hang on.
Lux says: Yeah, he says that's fine. He wants assurance that no one will get hurt. 24 hour immunity after the meeting, if you two don't strike a deal.
Tony Stark says: That's acceptable.
Lux says: He says that's fine then. And just hung up on me.
Tony Stark says: Sounds like him.
Lux says: Meh. I wish the idiot had called you and not me.
Tony Stark says: Heh. He never was straight to the point.
Lux says: Meant to ask. The Emeraude murder - that was Altair, right?
Tony Stark says: Yeah. Girl tried to kill me when I was sleeping.
Lux says: Seriously?
Tony Stark says: Heh. Seriously.
Lux says: Mousy thing like that?!
Tony Stark says: Surprising, I know.
Lux says: I don't know if that's impressive or stupid on her part.
Tony Stark says: Both, I'd say.
Tony Stark says: Impressively stupid, perhaps.
Lux says: Let's go with that. I'm assuming Altair will be with you for the Stane meeting. You want me to send Sariel over in case he tries to pull anything and hurt the kids?
Tony Stark says: Yeah, sounds good. Can't be too careful with Stane.
Lux says: I'll give her a heads up and spend the evening in my basement then. Anyway. Speaking of which, I promised her some non-business time tonight. I'm off.
Tony Stark says: Heh, alright. Have fun.
Lux says: Oh, I will.
Lucifer stared at the screen, rereading the instant message conversation between himself and Tony. The set up was flawless. Stane was the perfect fall man. After all, Stane was one of Lucifer’s allies and, indeed, in the city area. All that had to be done at this point was for him to tip off the police that Anthony Stark, notorious mafia boss and his body guard, would be located at the docks near the harbor at 10 PM in two days. Call from a public phone. Disguise the voice with a voice modifier. No one would be the wiser. He would order Stane’s death to be taken care of quickly after Tony’s arrest, to make it look as if he was taking vengeance for his cousin.
Still. His hand in all of this could easily be revealed, if someone asked the wrong question or looked too hard at Stane. Lucifer sighed and rubbed at the bridge of his nose. He had to pray that Stark’s children wouldn’t figure him out. He loved the two dearly, and hated the thought of them turning against him. They were powerful in their own right, and could easily end his life if he gave them the opportunity.
The fact that he wasn’t informing Sariel of his movements could also cost him, he knew. She always tended to let him take falls when she felt he deserved it, and he had told her very little of his plans to over throw his cousin. There was no need for her to know the intracacies of what he was planning, or even that he was actively working to overthrow Tony. He didn't want her to be lumped in with him, if Tony ever caught word of what Lucifer was trying to do. No need for her to die with him as well if all went wrong.
The more he thought about it, the more he considered the possiblity that the entire affair could be the biggest mistake of his life. He quietly prayed that he would be proved wrong.. A discreet, successful coup with no more blood spilled than Stane’s.
His thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock on his office door.
“Lux?” Sariel asked, sticking her head in. For once she was dressed casually, in a long shirt and a black tank top, looking thoroughly relaxed. He had given her the day off, and she had spent it, as she always did, at the spa, getting all of her tension out. “C’mon. You said you’d make dinner tonight.”
“I know,” he replied, finally tearing his eyes away from the computer. Lucifer closed out of the conversation and shut down the computer. Any remaining work matters could wait until tomorrow.
He wrapped an arm around Sariel’s waist and began to head in the direction of the kitchen, smiling.
“Anything important going on that kept you?” she asked.
“Nah,” Lucifer said. “You know. Just business as usual.”
