This is going to be WICKED sappy, nerdy, emotional, blah blah, and GOOFY! So bear with me.
Callie hasn't been bitted for over 2 months- since the dentist told me what was up with her mouth. She had her wolf teeth, which were these little sharp hooks that smacked her bit and made it REALLY painful for her to work with a bridle. So obviously, I hadn't been bridling her, or riding, for that matter.
Well, today I decided that it had been 2 weeks since her "surgery" and she was ready to get the ol' bridle again. I figured I'd tack her up and take her outside for a little walk in the snow. Couldn't hurt, right? Plus, if she really was feelin' it, the snow's soft LOL.
So I grabbed her, brushed her and made her pretty, put on the saddle.
Rewind to 2 months ago:
Callie sees bridle, bridle goes to face, Callie's face goes UP, Callie's body goes right.
Hmm.
Today: I raised the bit to her mouth and she kept her face at level with mine and took the bit right away. I was SO, SO pleased. Especially since she'd had so much time off.
We went outside into the ring and I got on her FROM THE GROUND for the first time ever! She was awesome and just stood there, even with no one next to her. (There were plenty of people on the property while I was riding, BTW.)
So I got on and walked her around a bit, like she'd never had any time off from training. Part of the ring was plowed, so we trotted up and down that a few times, then walked some more. She kept veering into the deeper snow, and I let her; we were only walking and she was being SO good.
Forward 15 minutes. The snow OUTSIDE the ring is looking so welcoming, and my horse is a saint. But, oh gracious! The gate is locked!
Never fear, Callie the wonder horse knows her voice commands! "Walk up, walk, WHOA. Stand."
Gate is opened. Voila! Perfecto.
We go into the field and walk around, then I ask for a little trot (it was all plowed) and we trotted up the stretch a few times. Callie was having so much fun and was acting so willing to do what I asked her to.
We walked into the unplowed part, where the snow was up to her knees and I asked her to walk; instead, she tossed her head playfully and kicked up her legs and pranced(umm, yes, pranced, leaped..) through the snow, ears foward and eyes bright. I must have looked like a fool; I was yelling "Weeee! Good girlll! Weeee so much fuuuunnn!"
We walked around the property a little more, and Mike told me she looked great and what a great job I've done with her.
Callie proceeded to nuzzle against his jacket and investigate the bench that he was moving. The brat is fearless.
Honestly, I've never had such an amazing ride. It sounds so lame, I know, but I rode MY horse tonight and did something with her that I wouldn't trust some other horses with.
I love her so much. And it made me feel good to know that she was having fun with what we were doing, too!
I feel accomplished and so proud of my girl.
