Watch a documentary that was on IFC about
No Wave called
Kill Your Idols, which is one of those punk mini-genres I've tried (and failed) to get into. This doc reminded me why: it is utterly pretentious bullshit, like somebody said "the Romones are sellouts for using chords. We just hit the guitar and scream into the mic." Plus, I like to think I have some kind of taste in music. And while I've been so-so about Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I wanted to choke Karen O, who has the interview skills of a table. Straight out of Valley Girl... if I heard any more "likes" and "you knows," I'd choke.
Random weird shit: J.G. Thirlwell, who does all the Venture Bros. music. He actually looks like a VB character in real life, and was actually kind of a cool interviewee. And they showed Lydia Lunch giving him a blowjob in some kind of 1981 avant garde film. Which was kind of whoa.
Overall, it was mildly amusing for the pretentiousness, but mostly pissed me off. It pisses me off that people like this have recording contracts, and A.R.E. Weapons talk about how they make $1 million a year, and do coke and get tons of art school girl pussy. Black Dice fucking sucks, and I liked J.G. Thirlwell even more when he said that he'd get bored of their album after a few listens, and go back to obscure jazz. Though it was amusing listening to people hint that the Strokes were sellouts. And no matter how many times I've tried, I've never managed to get into Sonic Youth.
Also: anyone that consciously rips off Suicide is a moron. They score a few points for being ahead of their time proto-electronica, and all the stories about Alan Vega beating people in the audience with a length of chain are pretty cool, though I can't listen to them. But I mean, they were that out there in 1974, which counts for something I guess.
Another random highlight: Gogol Bordello. No clue what they are doing in this documentary, since they are a gypsy punk band from Ukraine, and actually have some musical talent, and I've heard their live shows are actually a ton of fun.
