Just got back from District 9. Very, very, very good, but I wasn't quite as blown away as, say, Children of Men. For some reason that I can't quite put my finger on, it reminds me of Blade Runner, not so much in visual style, but in storytelling tone.
Very divided on whether they should make a sequel. It had a pretty bittersweet ending, and they kept it totally open.
The CGI is amazing. You pretty much forget that it is CGI.
OK, first off, whoever posted the link about the weapons being "pants shittingly awesome" on Fark wasn't lying. If you want to make a movie based off an FPS (Half-Life movie, cough cough), use the last half hour of this movie as a template.
I fucking loved the mech battle, and the mech armaments. I mean, the thing had the gravity gun from HL2! And that whole attack where it just pulled bullets out of the air, compressed them into a ball, and blew them back as a huge ball of shrapnel was fucking awesome. As was the lightening gun that made people explode/rail machinegun. The sonic weapon that blows people through walls. Shit, I almost hope they make an FPS game out of this.
I also really, really want to know more about the prawns. Why it was that their ship came to Earth (they hint in the movie that there was some kind of plague on the mothership). Did anybody else notice they almost appeared to have a caste system, based off of coloration, where scientists were multicolored, and drones were solid black? I like how just as Christopher's son was trying to go into background regarding their home world, they just give you two tantalizing facts (it has 7 moons, and is bigger than Earth) when he gets interrupted.
I also really, really want to see more of their tech. I liked how really all you saw were scraps that still worked, but even that was amazing (like the holo-displays, the command module, the mech, etc.).
And part of me wants to see a sequel, just because Christopher swore to Wikus that he would be back in 3 years, and would be able to turn him back.
And I did like with the ending how, in addition to the kind of bittersweet love aspects of it with Wikus and his wife, there was the whole concept that there was a very real possibility that Christopher could return at the head of an armada of very, very pissed off prawn in a few years, and that nobody really wanted to think about that...
