14 Songs For Conspiracy - The Rukia Rescue Remix
Okay, the title is a tad misleading as this is technically not a remix, it's just a mix. I just wanted alliteration. But, regardless, this is the mix for the biggest arc to hit Bleach since, well, ever [until the current, on-going one, of course]. The Saga of four friends [and one cat] journeying through the Belly of the Beast and tearing through wave after wave of Shinigami opposition to eventually stand tall and do What's Right: Rescue Rukia, who lies with her head on the chopping block.
Of course, there's more to the story than just all that, and the villains are far from villainous at times. We have the Best Friend who was forced to kidnap said friend as part of his duty, the honor-bound older brother, the prodigy who knows something wrong in Paradise, his crush, and her dorky captain who dies. Woe.
So, the Heroes tear their way through this very three-dimensional and wholly unpredictable band of "baddies," only to find out that said dorky dead guy is virtually Satan incarnate, and they've been doing his will this whole freaking time. Shame, that. He ownz everybody completely, escapes, and Soul Society is left to pick up the pieces.
Oh, and Rukia doesn't come home. Bummer.
But, regardless, this is the Mix devoted to the people, the events, and the epic that is - The Rukia Rescue Arc. Let's begin.
1.
Social Distortion - Reach For The Sky. This is the song for Kurosaki Ichigo, our hero, and all around good-guy. He's the one who does the most ass-kicking, has the biggest battles, and is generally the baddest mofo since Shaft. But, he's not perfect. He's had his failings, and a bit of angst stirred in to boil, but he's gonna do everything he can today to make a brighter tomorrow for everyone; just in case he's not there for it.
When I was young I was invincible,
I found myself not thinking twice,
I never thought about no future,
it's just the roll of the dice,
But the day may come,
When you've got something to lose,
And just when you think you're done paying dues,
When you say to yourself
Dear god, what have I done?
I hope it's not too late because tomorrow,
May never come,
Reach for the sky 'cus tomorrow,
May never come,
Reach for the sky 'cus tomorrow,
May never come.
2.
The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil. While the last song was for our hero, this is the song for our baddies. This is the theme of Aizen's Crew, the Bad Man himself and his two cohorts, Gin and Tousen. This is the song for them, the song for the evil. The title is Tousen's; he's the one who sympathises with evil, and calls it justice. Gin is the vocals, that sensuously serpentine demon who'll call you to the darkside with a look and a hiss. And the lyrics? The lyrics are all Aizen, baby.
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
So if you meet me, have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste.
3.
Theory of a Deadman - Santa Monica. Ichigo was a happy lad, saving souls with the help of his munchkin mentor Rukia, until the big bad Death Gods came along and took her away, leaving him to die in the process. This is the song of Rukia's Leaving, and the hole that's left in the world when she's gone. She vanishes, and Ichigo has to pick up the pieces.
It hurts to breathe
Every time that you’re not next to me
Her minds made up the girl is gone
And now I’m forced to see
I think I’m on my way
Oh it hurts to live today
And when she said
Don’t you wish you were dead like me
I remember the day
When ya left for Santa Monica
Ya left me to remain will all your excuses for everything
I remember the time when ya left for Santa Monica
I remember the day ya told me it’s over
4.
Theory of a Deadman - What You Deserve. In Ichigo's party is a boy named Ishida Uryu, a Quincy who has a decidedly strong hatred for Shinigami after watching his beloved Grandfather die because they didn't come and help him fast enough. Then he gets to Soul Society, and meets the man who is responsible for his grandfather's death, Kurotsuchi Mayuri. And all hell breaks loose. This is the song of Ishida vs. Mayuri.
You try to string me up
You can never get the best of me
Well i've never been to California
and I'll never care if I get there anyway
Don't ever lose your morals
since I could never fill that hole
and I never burned your letters
but I think i'll like you better
when you get what you deserve
5.
Smash Mouth - Defeat You. Rukia's best friend since coming to Soul Society is Abarai Renji, and he's one of the two who had to bring her back to Soul Society, nearly killing Ichigo in the process. Then he meets Ichigo again, and it's time for a good, old-fashioned Shonen-style Rival Fight. They know that the other is wrong, and will only fuck things up in the end, so they'll stop at nothing to end it. Once and for all. This, ladies and gents, is Ichigo vs. Renji, Round 2.
All that knowledge all those skills
All the gas it takes to get on top of the hill
And while the others try to take your spot
You wanna make them stop but you gotta make them stop
Would you do anything whatever it takes
Jacks in the road yeah fix the brakes
It the instinct that's got us locked up tight
And it's the madness that's keeping us up all night
Hey, I know where you're from
It makes it that much nicer to meet you
Hey, I know what you've done
It makes it that much better to defeat you
6.
The Offspring - Self-Esteem. Okay, admittedly this is more tongue-in-cheek than anything else, but this is the song for Yamada Hanatarou. He's kicked around, he's picked on, and he's got all the spine of a jellyfish. Or so it seems. But Hanatarou, for whatever reason, is driven by his moral compass to aid Ichigo and save Rukia from execution. Still, the boy's got little in the way of self-esteem, so this is the song for him.
Now I know I'm being used
That's okay man cause I like the abuse
I know she's playing with me
That's okay cause I've got no self esteem
7.
Disturbed - Violence Fetish. The only song that could ever really work for the epic, the terrible, the massive fight that followed the introduction of Hanatarou is this. See, there's a very special Shinigami in Soul Society. His name is Zaraki Kenpachi, and he likes to fight. A lot. In fact, his entire driving point of existence is bloodshed, and he lives for the chance of finding a worthy opponent. This opponent, it so happens, is Kurosaki Ichigo. Kurosaki Ichigo vs. Zaraki Kenpachi - a battle for the ages.
How do you live without playing the game
Sit on the side and expect to keep sane
Step right up and be a part of the action
Come get a piece of it before it's too late
Take a look around
You can't deny what you see
Were living in a violent society
Well my brother let me show you a better way
So get your game face on because it's time to play
You're pushing and fighting your way you're ripping it up
8.
Panic! At the Disco - There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought of It Yet. Shinigami have special swords called Zanpakutoh, and one of the properties is they transform; twice, actually. The second level is intensely powerful, rare to achieve, and it is called Bankai. This is the song for Ichigo and Renji's bankai, and their pimpin' new status.
I'm the new cancer, never looked better
And you can't stand it
I know because you say so under your breath
You're reading lips, "When did he get at all confident?"
Haven't you heard that I'm the new cancer?
Never looked better
And you can't stand it
9.
Johnette Napolitano. All his career as a Shinigami, Renji has had one goal - to surpass Kuchiki Byakuya, the adoptive brother of Rukia who basically stole her away from him. So when he finally gets bankai, he's ready to throw down, right? Wrong. This is the song for after the fight, as Renji stands battered, beaten, bloody, and dying in the face of his seemingly unattainable goal. This is Renji Defeated.
I wanted to believe
Bodies swinging from trees
Struggling to stand
With your head in your hands
A stoic last stand
Of a dying man
I wanted to believe
As I watched your world
Crumble in your hands
I wanted to believe
As you raised your glass
To your last stand
And I wanted to believe
You would win
The war in your head
That I did not understand
That I did not understand
10.
Three Days Grace - {I Hate) Everything About You. Remember that cat I mentioned in the beginning? Yeah, that cat is actually a powerful, runaway Shinigami named Shihouin Yoruichi. Yoruichi had a girlfriend bodyguard/close friend named Soi Fong. But when Yoruichi disappeared from Soul Society, Soi Fong was left in the lurch. Confused and depressed, she turned bitter and hateful to her still-beloved memory of Yoruichi. Then Yoruichi comes back, and it's time for a grand-scale cat fight. Yoruichi vs. Soi Fong - the ultimate "lover's spat".
Every time we lie awake
After every hit we take
Every feeling that I get
But I haven't missed you yet
Only when I start to think about it
I hate everything about you
why do I love you?
I hate everything about you
why do I love you?
11.
AC/DC - Back In Black. Ichigo, too, has a Bankai. And Ichigo, too, throws down with Byakuya, the last man standing between him and Rukia. But Ichigo has something special up his sleeve - a sweet black coat to go with his jet black katana. And after his last loss to the 6th Division Captain in two seconds flat, Ichigo is ready for revenge. This song is for the Ichigo-Byakuya rematch.
Back in black
I hit the sack
I've been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm gettin' loose
From the noose
That's kept me hanging about
I've been looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat's eyes
Abusin' every one of them and running wild
12.
Nancy Sinatra - (Bang Bang) My Baby Shot Me Down. A ways back, a goofy guy named Aizen Sousuke died, and his adoring Vice-Captain Hinamori Momo went kinda crazy. She was thrown in jail, but broke out, and then discovered that Aizen was really alive! Best day ever, right? Wrong. Aizen is the evillest thing since Income Tax, and stabbed her right through the heart. This is Aizen's Betrayal.
Now he's gone. I don't know why
And till this day, sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie
Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down
13.
Nickelback - Just For. But fear not, for the ace boy genius and all-around prodigy Hitsugaya Toushiro is on the case. And after seeing the smiling face of Aizen, and the bleeding body of his beloved Momo, he goes off. In a flash, he's Bankai ready, and prepared for some high-quality revenge. This, folks, is Histugaya's Vengeance.
And I want to make him
Regret life since the day he met you
Yes I do
And I want to make him
Take back all that he took from you
Yes I do
And I want to rip his heart out
Just for hurting you
And I want to break his mind down
Yes I do
14.
Devil May Cry 3 - Taste the Blood. Unfortunately for just about everyone, Histugaya fails, and Aizen moves on to come after what he really wanted - the magic doo-dad hidden in Rukia's body. Ichigo, Renji, and a host of others stand up to stop him, but to no avail. Aizen vs. Everyone ends squarely in the favor of the Dark Side. The arc ends with his disappearance, and so does this FST.
Taste the blood
Taste your fate
Swallow your pride
With your hate
Your last breath
Your last stance
The last of all
In your command
But that's not all. Because I love y'all so much, I've packed this sound-track to the gills with Bonus Tracks - six in total. So get ready, things are about to get a little more fun.
15.
Barking Monkey - The Ballad of Ned Kelly. There's something just a little bit Celtic about Ichigo and Renji; from their red hair, to their invincible warrior spirit, not to mention Ichigo's big-ass sword and Renji's wild tattoos, so it's only fitting that the Ichigo/Renji Remix song gets a little bit Folk. They're two guys who'll go out to the bitter end in battle, and wouldn't want it any other way.
I don't wanna die like Donahughe
That bush-ranger so brave
Taken by the government and
Forced to walk in chains
I'd rather fight
With all my might
While I have eyes to see
I'd rather die
Ten thousand times
Than hang from the gallow's tree
16.
Social Distortion - I Wasn't Born To Follow. Since Ichigo's song is Social D, I figured it suitable that Sado "Chad" Yasutora's was, too. Chad is one tough mofo, almost as bad as Ichigo or Renji, but he stands out of the spot-light, an unsung hero in a cast of big names and bigger personalities. So this goes out to him, the stoic, lovable tough-guy who does what he knows is right and doesn't let anything stand in his way.
gonna sing the songs of the streets again
gonna knock me off my feet so get ready
I'll sing a song for the fallen angels
This one goes to all the unsung heroes
We're Going Down, Down to the streets below
'cause don't you know, I wasn't born to follow
17.
Lisa Loeb - Sandalwood. I feel a bit bad giving Inoue Orihime the love ballad on this mix, but there's little else I have to suit her. She's the healer, the caring soul, the one who assuages the wounds physical and mental for her comrades. And she's desperately, desperately in love with Kurosaki Ichigo.
She can't tell me that all of the love songs have been written,
'cause she's never been in love with you before.
Your skin smells lovely like sandalwood.
Your hair falls soft like animals.
I'm tryin' to keep cool, but everyone likes you
18.
Smile Empty Soul - Your Way. Last in Ichigo's party is Ishida Uryu, a lad who's been mentioned before I'm sure. Ishida seems like your average cool, aloof guy at first, but boiling beneath the surface is a sea of angst and rage at the world and at his father. So I stand against convention, and instead of giving him the sophistocated Techno-Pop, he gets this, a song to lay his heart on the line.
promises of a better life
but what's wrong with the one i'm leading
everyone has a different fight
a different wound that keeps them bleeding
so what's wrong with a little fun
everybody needs to find their something
is this how your gonna treat your son
fuck 'em up and give em nothing
19.
The Used - The Back of Your Mouth. Yes, Aizen's Crew got their song, but Ichimaru Gin definitely deserves his own. He's a snake, a sly and seductive liar who charmed the pants of all but a select few, and kept his poker face to the end. He came out clean, only once showing anything but calm cheer at the world around him. Don't count this one out.
In this exchange i often touch myself,
So go ahead and let those dirty words pass right through me.
Just passing through.
Not stopping by.
Not saying hi.
Girl you can't kill a liar!
20.
Wolfmother - The Joker & The Thief. And in the end, the final track goes to the coolest manipulater, the most unexpected surprise, and the all around hottest motha' ever to come out of Soul Society. This goes out to the mastermind, Urahara Kisuke, the one who sent Ichigo and Co. on their way and placed that magic doo-dad inside Rukia in the first place. Give your props to the utter genius that is Urahara.
I said the joker is a wanted man,
He makes his way all across the land,
See him sifting through the sand,
So I'll tell you all the story,
About the joker and the thief of the night,
Always laughing in the midst of power,
Always living in the final hour,
There is always sweet in the sour,
We are not goin' home
