last night alyssa and kevin and i drank some carlo rossi and then went to Heaven art gallery. They had a show called Psst Shhh and there were 14 artists and then Birthmark played followed by White/Light. It was that or alex haney's party, and i think they would have both been fun, but the show wasn't over till like midnight and we didn't want to have to get a cab back to logan square.

on the blue line down to damen, there was a homeless man with a really good sob story. "Ladies and Gentlemen, it's black history month. Could y'all find it in your hearts to help a starving black man? I have this much money to my name (pulls out coins). Please, i'm begging you, anything at all, i'm hungry, i'm homeless" etc.

i had seen this guy before but i didn't have any money to give him at the time. So i handed him a dollar. Then he walked on to this older white couple. they were evidently coming back from a vacation, because they had 4 huge suitcases which were piled up in the seat in front of us. The homeless guy walks up them, and all of a sudden the white haired guy with the suitcases gets really animated, pointing his finger and saying, "what you're doing is illegal! you can't just walk up and down public transportation asking for hand-outs. What you're doing is making the white people feel uncomfortable!"

I cut in, saying "Are you fucking serious? You're uncomfortable? He's homeless!"
I was so pissed. That attitude is what's wrong with the world: "Helping you out would make me uncomfortable. the fact that you're even asking me for help makes me uncomfortable."

that's bullshit.

So the guy looks me up and down, kind of squares me up, and says simply, "you're young"

as if i'll one day callous over like his dried up ass. fuck that. fuck him.

to be fair, as the 'homeless' guy was walking away from us, i noticed that he had the size-tag left on his pants. Evidently he had recently used begged money to buy some new pants. forgot to take off the tags. a little demeaning i suppose.

But what good is incredulity when people are in need? Why doubt whether to give a homeless person some cash? I normally would just offer to buy a homeless person a meal, or the bus pass they're asking for. But in this case i just gave dude a buck. what the fuck it couldn't hurt.
