for all intents and purposes, my 1010-1140 class got canceled so we could watch "HISTORY" (said 10,000 x over and over on cable news). i sat next to my friends evelyn and michael and smiled big at the end of obama's speech. the thing about it was that he said we won't apologize for our way of life.
that was the only thing i didnt expect him to say. or rather, it came as a surprise.
maybe we shouldn't apologize for our way of life. but let's look at it for a minute.
yes we can go buy whatever we want and surround ourselves with luxuries the likes of which most of the world has yet to access.we have great schools by international standards. we have endless opportunities as white upper-middle class kids (which are the only ones who will be looking at this). but we also suffer depression, a high suicide rate, obesity, apathy, insomnia, eating disorders, lack of community, alcoholism, rampant drug abuse among even the most academically endowed, gluttonous materialism, envy, pride, wrath.
what on a metaphysical, spiritual level can be attained through our monetary freedoms?
less than nothing.
so perhaps apologizing for our way of life is indeed the wrong approach.
perhaps we should consider uprooting it entirely for the sake of our souls and our personal and communal wholeness.
i wish rabacko babamabama would have said something like that.
oh yeah and pepsi re-made their logo to look like an upside down obama campaign seal.
