you think they can't do anything, then you give them a fair shot and they blow you away.

This is only sometimes true of Wren. I think Oslo is a little advanced in the fine motor skills stuff though if he can crack an egg with one hand (I still can't, lol!). Wren has been baking with me several times a week since she was a year old and she still can't figure out how to dump a cup of anything (dry, she's better with wet) without spilling. She is also left handed though. I know that it may not matter but it seems like it kinda does? She holds things kinda funny and I have a hard time figuring out how to show her how to hold things, because I'm very, very right handed.

I do worry about her patience a bit though, esp with fine motor. She gives up on puzzles, sorting games, etc really fast because she hates fiddling. She'll just throw the puzzle pieces where they belong super fast and call it a day even if they don't perfectly fit in the spot they belong. She reminds me of BOTH me and Andy in this regard, and I wish it wasn't so!

Her gross motor is incredible though. Her ability to somersault and swim and climb is way better than I ever would have expected. So in that regard she always blows me away. And of course, anything related to verbal learning will always be her strong suit. She's really good with reasoning skills, if that makes sense -- she always surprises me in her ability to follow logic and use it/remember stuff/etc. For example, she hates fiddling to make the sorting blocks fit but after two times of using a particular one she'll remember the name of the shape and where it goes. So I hear you in the general sentiment -- that two year olds are amazing and surprising. But we're still not at the stage where I can let her do a lot and expect it to happen at all functionally! I am so eager to see what Ilan's development will be like, to see the way he overlaps and diverges from Wren. So far he is sooo similar to her in so many ways -- he is so socially engaged, and so "chatty" -- but also different in that he is so much more gentle and easily startled.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the way you interact with Os and I take a lot of inspiration from it. ILU!

Also, like half our compost is eggshells.

haha, most of our compost is eggshells too. and rotten tomatoes, thanks bloom rot disease!

see, and oslo's gross motor skills aren't so fantastic. and you know what? he's left handed too! WEIRD. dumping and pouring takes a lot of fussing before i remember, and place handles and such on his left side, but he's still not as coordinated at that either. i'm not sure how he developed the hand strength necessary to bust an egg with one hand, because i too cannot do that! but anyway, i've noticed oslo has trouble isolating one foot after another to climb up stairs if he starts with his right, and for some reason he often gets stuck at the top of slides trying to figure out the movement involved in sitting, then unfolding his legs out in front of him, and i think that's part of his lefty-ness.

he is pretty persistent with puzzles however, and i tend to think of that as being part of his "male-ness," lol. not to be a sexist asshole, but his intense focus on lining up his trains, or creating little hierarchies of animals who do certain things together...i just see this as being very linear and not something i can relate to at all!
