Title: Mini-Camp
Pairing: No real pairing. Hence the 'and' instead of a '/'. It's past Maine/Wright with references to Maine/Pelfrey and Wright/Reyes.
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This might have happened...prob not.
Notes: Well,
sheep_mambo asked how did Maine tell Wright about his thing with Pelf? in regards to
Lonely (which was a kinda-sequel to
Japan). I came up with this idea which was meant to be just a short little drabble but turned out longer. Takes place at mini-camp. Hi, I have unoriginal title names. Enjoy ;]
David squints his eyes as he looks up at the Florida sky. There's a bit of an overcast, but not enough to keep the sun from poking out most of the time. He places his glove on top of his hat, letting it rest there as he crossed his arms across his chest.
It's early in the day and guys are still showing up. Black t-shirts beginning to dot the field, some starting their drills but most still stretching and talking. Rick Peterson had about a half dozen pitching prospects standing around him, hanging on to every word the coach had to say.
David lets out a sigh. He had hoped to recognize a few more faces. The ones he did were guys he didn't even know too well. Jose had laughed at him on the phone when he told him he was going to mini-camp.
"Dave, 'das meant for minor leaguers."
The thought of Jose made him smile though. David had made him a promise about half way through the season that he'd come visit in the winter. In less then 24 hours, that promise would be kept. His luggage already sitting on board owner Jeff Wilpon's plan, David would be in the Dominican by tomorrow morning.
"Ya know, I thought I was going to be the biggest name here. But of course you have to show up." A voice next to him snaps him out of his thoughts.
He looks up to right to see John Maine smiling back at him. David laughs, fully aware that John prefers to not be the one in the spotlight.
"Actually, I'm not. Pedro's here meeting with some doctor's."
"That bastard." Maine says, smiling at his own dry sarcasm. "So why are you here?"
David shrugs his shoulders and looks back out onto the field. "Why you here?"
"Math."
David turns back and gives him a questioning look.
"Three spots. Seven guys." His voice takes on a serious tone for the first time. "Just want to make sure I'm in the rotation."
"You really think that? I'd say if anyone had a lock as the third starter, it'd be you."
"Yeah, well, Willie's made it clear that no pitcher under the age of 40 has a guaranteed spot in the rotation." John says, the smile coming back to his face.
David laughs. They stand side by side for a few minutes, looking on as some minor leaugers begin to take batting practice. "Seven?" David finally says turning back to him. "There's that many?"
John holds out a hand and begins counting on his fingers. "Me. Williams. Who is also here somewhere, I think."
"Yeah, I saw him before. Perez makes three."
"Then Soler, Vargas." He holds out his other hand and continues to count. "Humber. And-"
"And Pelfrey. Right, that makes seven."
"...And, yeah, Pelfrey."
David notices the corner of John's mouth twitch up slightly. Interesting, very interesting. "Yeeeaaah. You know if he's coming to this thing?"
John sighs, "Nah, he's not coming." he says, his eyes searching the field.
"Bummer." David keeps his stare locked on him, smiling.
It takes a minute for John to notice. He turns to him, "What?" he says, furrowing his brow. David just smiles wider. John gives him a shove, almost knocking the glove off his head, "God, I hate you."
He chuckles to himself. "So does that mean I'm guessing right?"
"Hate you."
"Too bad Pelf isn't here to see you in those sexy black socks."
"Hate you, so much."
David can see that John is doing everything he can to keep from smiling. He lets the subject go, fully content with himself, and returns his eyes to the baseball diamond. he starts to feel slightly uncomfortable, however, as he notices groups of young prospects looking back at them from across the field.
"Is it me, or is everyone kind of staring at us?." David says scrunching up his nose.
"We're just the popular kids, I guess."
"You know, Jose laughed at me when I told him I was coming."
John smiles. "Yeah, he laughed at me too."
David's head snaps back in his direction. "You've...I mean, you two have talked?"
"He called me. Wished me happy holidays." John smirks at his shocked expression. "Don't look so surprised."
"Well, the last time you two were in the same room you could cut the tension with a knife." David says referring to the ground breaking ceremony the three attended the week following their trip to Japan.
"Jose's not one to hold grudges, you know that. We talked. Things are good."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. He said we just have to include him next time."
David laughs. What a messed up team, he thinks to himself.
"So, why are you here? You really don't need to be." John says, crossing his arms.
Taking the glove off his head he looks back up at the sky. The clouds have begun to pass and David feels the warm glow of the sun on his skin. "Just miss baseball, I guess."
