Burnout

I feel exhausted. We're talking about head-splitting headaches and a bad case of the sore throat which was probably exacerbated by the makeup debate round I had earlier.

Which reminds me how I used to laugh at the word "exacerbated" thinking it didn't even exist. I remember, it was some Idea tournament back in highschool, I was hanging around with Char (Mercado), Steph and other povvies. The speaker was from UST, and back then, I had this notion that they all had weird accents (and thus bad english - they probably inherited the accent from Franco Larcina). He kept using the word "exacerbate" every 15 seconds, and I found it funny. So funny, in fact, that I kept writing rude comments in my mini-notebook. All that time, I kept thinking "It's exaggerate, dumbass!". I remember the other povvies telling me they thought it was a real word, but they weren't sure so they suggested we ask.

After the debate, we all lined up to ask a senior college debater person about the existence of the word. Turns out, it did exist, and it's meaning was close to "exaggerate" (except it was more nuanced in usage).

Well, that's that. Karma preys on the proud. :P

Also, since I'm on a string of updates, it's interesting how most of the beggar population are composed of the elderly, disabled, and children. Well, there's a purpose to that- it makes us assume that they have no choice but to beg thereby forcing us to give in to that intense rush of pity. The sad thing is, it's cliche, and nobody really bothers to care anymore.

When they're old, they always ask you for money for medicine. Like in UP, this elderly man always comes by the econ building to show people his medical documents. His sob story consists of a multitude of hospital bills continually pouring down on his head combined drastic inability to seek proper treatment because of lack of money. Maalaala mo kaya, anyone?

Still, you wonder whenever the man passes you by. You see him often, so he might just be scamming you. The point is, even if he was scamming you, I don't think it costs that much to give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, if a man has to lie to eat, then kudos to his creativity and thoroughness for having the med documents to back up his story. If he didn't lie, then you'd at least be helping him out.

Anyway, when it comes to disabled people, we're talking about music. In Katipunan, near the LRT station, there's this man who plays old (and unheard of) songs on his run-down electric guitar and amplifier. Amusingly, the guitar was well tuned (for it's condition). Most of the time, I have my Ipod on too loud to even notice the guy.

Children... are the most amusing. As I was going home today, this kid just walks up to me and starts asking for money. "Kuya, sige na." He says. "Mayaman ka naman eh". I just ignored him, because I thought me being rich isn't an excuse for me to indulge you. But later on, I thought twice. Maybe it IS the best excuse for me to indulge you. Things like that happen when you don't have your Ipod on when you walk.
