Summary: K and Sakano chat in the coffee shop after meeting in the park. set after "don't cry"
After a short walk, Sakano had led them to a small coffee shop K hadn’t noticed before. The blonde smiled as Mia squealed with joy and demanded to be let down from her father’s shoulders. Once her feet hit the ground she was off like a shot into the little café, Michael quick on her heels.
“Mia loves this place” Sakano commented as entered the café, holding the door open for K to follow. “Her mother used to bring her here almost every day. No doubt she’s ordering the biggest ice cream sundae on the menu. That girls teeth are going to rot and fall out before she’s 12”.
The producer led them towards a large table in the corner of the room and soon they were joined by two extremely hyperactive 7 year olds followed by a smiling waitress. The waitress was carrying a tray with two huge ice creams on it. Both covered with lashings of chocolate sauce and chopped nuts. One had slices of banana on it while the other had cherries. K’s eyes widened while Sakano simply sighed and shook his head. “Jesus Michael! Do you have any idea how much sugar is in that thing?!”
K and Sakano both ordered their coffees and took a moment to watch in amazement as the kids swallowed mouthful after mouthful of their sugary treat. K had been scolded by Michael when he scooped some of the ice cream with his finger for a taste. The blonde felt himself blushing once again at the sound of Sakanos laugh. When had he ever heard Sakano laugh like that? Like he didn’t have a care in the world? He defiantly was a different man outside of work.
The waitress returned with their coffees and smiled cheerfully at Sakano. “Good afternoon Sakano-San! It’s rare to see you in here on a weekday. I assume you have the day off work today?” Sakano nodded and took a sip of his coffee. “Good afternoon Sakura-Chan. Yes I did have the day off. I decided to take Mia to see Yumi today”.
K later learned that Yumi was Sakanos deceased wife. She had died in a huge car crash not long before he came from America to join Bad Luck. The accident had involved 3 cars and a truck on a road between Tokyo and Yokohoma. Everyone involved in the accident had died. K was filled with sadness listening to the story. Long after they finished their coffee they remained there talking, learning about each other. K wished he had done this a long time ago, Sakano was actually a very interesting person. The producer loved to travel and had covered most of the globe before he was the age of 20, Next stop on his list was Ireland. He was the drummer for a rock band back in his college days, K made a mental note to have Sakano play something for him next time they were in the studio. He had a great love for cats and had two at home, a black cat called Tyson and a tabby called Jinx. Sakano also had a passion for cooking and especially enjoyed cooking Italian food.
“You should come round for dinner one night K-San. We can grab a movie and some beer and have a guy’s night in. I can make us some hamburgers”. Ks reply was cut short at the sound of Mia giggling. “He he…kinnda like a date” she commented. This time it was Sakanos turn to blush. K coughed and tried to swallow the lump that formed in his throat. A date with Sakano? That didn’t sound like a bad idea actually. Once Sakano had composed himself he posed his question to K again.
K grinned and leaned across the table a little.
“It’s a date…”
