I am glad the bulk substance of my life does not depend on or employ in gross quantity shopping, shoplifting, getting dressed, slathering my face in make-up, going out to end up in a living room with substances and empty people, taking pictures of myself, taking pictures with aforementioned empty people, editing said pictures, posting said pictures ( Read more... )

I haven't spoken to you in literally almost forever but when I read this I was reminded of Pensacola. I've been to a lot of the co-op's here in Memphis, and everytime I go, there are always more than a few fashionable hippy dippy indie kids intentionally making me feel awkward because I'm not quite so fashion forwards, and let's face it, over the years I've become a lot less outgoing in social situations; there for making me feel miserable and out of place, and helping some of the kids here grow their ego's just a little bit bigger.

In Pensacola, I lived in a co-op for a little while that was simply called "309." I remember on probably more than one hundred occasions stranger's would knock on our door at 3 in the morning, needing a place to stay. Not your average "I-go-to-shows-that-no-ones-ever-heard-of" kids. But awkward, abused pregnant women, homeless drunken bums that were freezing their butts off, 13 year old "punk rawk" kids that got kicked out of their houses by their business-folk parents. It's sad, and I didn't neccessarily like all of the people that came, but I tried my damndest to make each and every person feel welcome. Because I knew that they came there for a reason, and a lot of them just needed something to eat and someone to talk to. It's just slightly disappointing because when I've gone to the co-op's here in Memphis, what I used to think was my home, MAYBE 3 people make an attempt to make me feel welcomed at all.

I've only been to Rozelle once, and I felt like I should've left as soon as I walked in, minus a couple of people that found out I had weed and begged me to smoke them out.

Anyways, I mainly just wrote this because you seem like you've grown a lot intellectually over the years and I'd honestly like to have a conversation with you sometime.

I hope all's well,
Sidni (aka the girl that went to Prescott with you when we were like..6)

I'd like to think DeCleyre is the kind of environment that accepts anyone who needs a hand. They're a housing co-op though, so it's quite different. You've got to take into account that Rozelle is not by any means looking to take in all of Memphis for the night. We're aiming to be a business that provides a service for cheap, maybe free in some cases, but not house anyone. We won't have anyone living there. Not only that, we're catering to a specific crowd: artists. In any case, I apologize that you didn't feel more welcome at Rozelle, but at this point the only reason there are people at the warehouse is during a fundraising show, so god knows who shows up to those. Especially if the time you went was the rave, because 90% of the crowd were strangers.

Anyway, it sucks that everyone's first impression of Rozelle is a concert. That is not what we want to do in the long run whatsoever. If you happen to come again, keep in mind that paying your five bucks at the door is a step closer to turning that warehouse into a community arts center, that you actually might feel welcome at.
