The Rhythm of Return
I wish us bravery.
Again and again we come to love
like the wave overcoming itself,
drawn towards shore not by choice
but by virtue of its nature.
I wish us clear and unapologetic sight.
The wisdom to submit to this,
the rhythm of return.
When we do not turn away,
again and again we come to love.
I wish us the courage to be broken.
The willingness to be torn open
so that again we may be healed
by the same hand that tears.
The wisdom to submit to this.
I wish us the strength to not regret.
To let ourselves accept the light
we’re given without thought of
whether or not we’ve earned it
so that again we may be healed.
I wish us to deny ourselves explanation
and simply love the question.
To come each night with fresh faith,
and give ourselves over to the rest we find
in the still warmth of the other’s body
whether or not we’ve earned it.
