If you want to cozy up tonight with a creature feature or two, here's my short list of all-time faves to chill your blood and ruin your sleep.
#5: John Carpenter's THE THING
A remake of the 1951 classic, Carpenter turns up the suspense, and covers it in outlandish gore. With the hapless hero played by Kurt Russell leading the scientists as they try to survive a homocidal parasite, you'll be huddled under a blanket or in the fetal position for two hours.
#4 Dracula (1931)
Charismatic and creepy, Bela Lugosi's Dracula IS the mold for all vampires that followed him. Director Tod Browning captures the macabe mood in masterful strokes of black, white, and gray.
#3 Scream
This improbable slasher can not be ignored as one of the great horror movies of all time, at the same time dissecting the genre as it slashes its way through the ranks of teen victims. Plus my doppelganger is in it.
#2 The Fog
What did I tell you about John Carpenter? He knows how to work the fear factor, kids. There's nothing scarier than what you can't see, and this movie is all about that. Something is in the creepy fog preying on a New England seaside town's people, and not even Adrienne Barbeau's ample cleavage can appeal to the monsters' sensitive sides. SO GOOD!
#1 Halloween (1978 original)
One of the scariest movies I've ever seen, it made the walk home from school when I was a kid in Suburbia turn into a fright walk. Who knew what was around my neighbor's hedges? Not to mention - YEP! - John Carpenter strikes again. There's no reason to mess with sequels, prequels, or remakes. This is your nightmare fuel.
