Mehrt: Nyne and the Mehrt coming at you at last, and Nyne headaches are becoming a big topic in the NFL.

Nyne: It's a headache that people are all of a sudden coming to the conclusion that football is a violent and dangerous sport when you get right down to it. What brought them to [this] conclusion all of a sudden? I mean, did [anyone] see Joe Theismann get his leg broken? Was that somehow not violent enough to stir up a protest or something?

Mehrt: Well it did kinda bring up hits below the knee to a point, but the concern these days is for the head, mainly the helmet to helmet hits, of which there were a rash of this past Sunday. It's a violent sport, this is going to happen, the question is how many were legit hits. I think thats what the league is looking at. They don't want headhunters out there, and it looks like a new crop of them are arising.

Nyne: Some of those hits, the person couldn't slow themselves down in time. Nobody should headhunt, but the NFL might go overboard to limit something that technically is a part of the game. Next thing you know, NFL will stand for 'National Flag League' because all anyone will be playing out there is flag football.

Mehrt: I think the big focus is due to two guys though, Harrison of the Steelers, who led with his head twice. And Merriweather of the Patriots, who went out of his way to put his hands to his side when he leapt up into a Ravens reciever. If the only hit that happened was the DeSean jackson hit, which was just ugly as hell, I don't think the league is having this discusion right now.

Nyne: If you make it that obvious then yes, you should be penalized. But the NFL has to try to not get in the way of the guys that are actually playing it the right way. Rodney Harrison said it best on Sunday Night Football that the only thing that will get a player's attention is to suspend him games. Like I said, I understand that there has to be some protections for people, but I don't want the rules to take away from the spirit of the game. We've seen enough of that this year.

Mehrt: It's one of those things, I can't define a dirty hit, but I know one when I see one. The league is treading some dangerous water here, but they have to. It's easy to tell when a guy is coming in for the proverbial kill, and when it's an accident. It was brought up last night on Monday Night Countdown, a guy can lead with his shoulder and still hit with his helmet if the target moves the wrong way. The league is going to have to watch any questionable hit very closely before handing down a fine or suspension, but they need to crack down on the guys who are trying to take guys out.

Nyne: I'm with you on that. They'll have to review which hits are just in the course of the play and which hits are obviously dirty. In a way, there's really no middle ground with this.

Mehrt: No there isn't. Either you're trying to hurt a guy or you aren't. I think the thing to remember is though, they've played football for a long time. there have been a lot of big hits without people getting hurt. No reason why it can't still happen.

Nyne: Yeah, but the NFL is working on the fact that it only takes [one] hit to end someone's career. They don't want to take chances on harming the golden cow any more than necessary. You know something, this also kinda dovetails into another topic - the 18 game season. Considering the hits people have taken this weekend, it has done a lot to strengthen the idea that the regular season should stay at 16 games. I was for the 18 game season until it dawned on me that it's hard enough to survive 16 or more weeks of hits, it would be almost abusive to stretch that out for two more weeks.

Mehrt: I said from the beginning that I didn't like the idea of an 18 game regular season, and this is why. How many guys make it through unscathed now? How many made it through 14 games unscathed? There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. And players aren't going to go for it.

Nyne: Their knees aren't gonna go for it. *chuckle*

Mehrt: Or ribs, or arms, or other various parts of the anatomy. *eyes Brett Favre*

Mehrt: Aaaaaanyway, that's all for this little blurb on the NFL, see ya next time folks. Twitter: @mehrt1 and @nyneshaydee, a Cowboy follows us so should you. We are Nyne and the Mehrt.....

Nyne: And this has been an ABC Production - Anyone But the Cowboys. Mehrt's got the Giants, I have the Redskins, and the Cowgirls have 4 losses. Life is good!

Mehrt: 2 celebration penalties and 1 win. *dies laughing*
