Simon sings, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy, when skies are grey, you’ll never know dear, how much I love you, so please don’t take, my sunshine away.” His face is blank for a second, like a jukebox searching for the next track. His bloody, gloved hands rub together, over and over.
He starts again, “You are my sunshine, my only…”
“River?” There’s a big question in Mal’s use of her name.
River lays a hand on Kaylee’s still chest. “A wolf devoured the sun.”
She looks at Simon, still singing, “cold makes things brittle.”
