Mirage of Blaze Novel Volume 21 Chapter 6

Dec 01, 2009 01:08

NB (Updated on 4 dec 09): I've accidentally used the given name of Kada Reijirou (ie 'Reijirou') in a few conversations in this chapter. Except for Kusama, the rest of them address Kada Reijirou by his family name (ie 'Kada'). I have updated the below.

The Evil Star Which Betrays Heaven

It had been two weeks since Takaya and Ushio were with the Redwhales.

The arrival of new recruits, including a modern man, had turned into a big conversational subject.

The Redwhales might have been crude and troublesome, but surprisingly they were rather open-minded, very unlike the typical Vengeful Resentful Warriors. However, they were capable of nasty acts. It reminded Takaya of the days when he was in high school, the time when he was mixing with older schoolmates, very gangster-like companions. They were people who did outlandish things just to prove their courage-- hooligans offering helping hands. The only difference was in the type of chaos created, the glory and jubilation that these people were after.

Ushio seemed to click well, going around conversing with various people of all corners. Very soon, he was assimilated. It was a different case for Takaya whom was largely alone most of the time. He was always keeping to himself, refusing to mix around. It could possibly be the odour of Kihachi’s onnen as everyone seemed to be keeping him at arm’s length. There was one exception --someone was watching him intently.

As previously promised, Reijirou had started his search for the cure of Kihachi’s poison. He summoned for the “specialist” residing in Sekkeiji of Kouchi, the resting place of Chousokabe Nobuchika’s spirit. His name was Nakagawa Kamon, with a role similar to a doctor, specializing in treating psychological issues. He had arrived with the purpose of ‘performing a diagnosis’. In total, Nakagawa came thrice. The first two sessions were meant to be counseling sessions. However, this round he came with various tailor-made specialized equipment.

“How is your situation now?”

Nakagawa was a refined person, a young man with fine features. As he possessed great spiritual-sensing ability, the role of a doctor suited him well. A very reliable doctor indeed.

“Nothing unexpected, I’m fine.”

“Really? You’re are a strong person !”

As he smiled, the row of straight white teeth was revealed. It left a deep impression on others. His gentleness blended well with his sophisticated character -- looking very much like a doctor of a rural village. He was always amiable during consultation and treatment, and always concerned about the well-being of his patients. Cautiously, Takaya threaded, making sure that his possessor identity was not exposed. Fortunately, he remained uncovered.

“After cracking my head, this is something that I came up with. Although it may not be easy, it should be more comfortable than your current eye-patch.”

Nakagawa brought the box over to Takaya. Upon opening, there was a pair of contact lenses. One was transparent, while the other was tinted in black.

“I’ve made it from a piece of glass sealed with incantation. It’s the same as what’s in that eye-patch. For better effect, the glass is made from holy salt petre, and has a talisman written on it. You may probably find it a little blurry, but it shouldn’t hinder your vision. The one tinted in black is meant to cover up that red-colour eye of yours, so you’ll not feel awkward in front of others. You may find the colouration inconvenient, but just treat it as if you’re wearing sunglasses.”

This was the first time that Takaya wore contact lenses. He was expecting a pair of spectacles and had not expected that Nakagawa would go to such length to make a pair of contact lenses. As he had been using only one eye for vision, his sense of depth was affected, making him very uncomfortable at times.

“Afterall, the primary objective of these contact lenses is to alleviate you from the problem associated with the usage of one eye. It still can’t directly rid you of the poison. So, please just treat the hindrance as a filter. It’s still not perfect, so do minimize direct eye-contact with people.”

The message was :- Not to overly trust the gears. Nakagawa further cautioned Takaya not to wear the contact lens for long stretches of time, as any poison accumulated inside the body would harm the eye. The eye-patch was still the safest option. The contact lenses should also be worn only in the spiritual enclosure of Tsurugi-hama.

After he was done with the explanation, Nakagawa took up a bottle filled with capsules.

“At times when you need to completely contain the poison, you can take this. This medicine is able to suppress your poison temporarily. It’s very useful if you need to mingle in a crowd, but as it’s a very strong medicine that has been heavily put with a spell, do refrain from using it unnecessarily. Any missteps could be detrimental.”

“Is the medicine that strong ?”

“I have added the legendary poisonous insect aka intestinal parasite.”

Nakagawa was frightening serious.

“So, don’t use it often. Besides, it will affect your spiritual power and you may not be able to use your power when the medication takes effect. So……let’s see how it goes…”

This was known as “using one poison to counter another”, and only to be confined as a neutralizing agent. Though the usage came with various conditions, it was still for the better-off. Takaya thanked him outright.

“One final advice………”

“Your poison seems to increase when you’re depressed. Negative sentiments will feed the poison and wreck your body. So don’t be too pessimistic, and refrain from indulging in any negative thoughts. Do try to control.”

“Even if that’s not the case, I still feel that you’ve something hidden deep in your heart, something extremely heavy. You seem to be burdened by a relationship that hurts you alot,” Nakagawa added.

Momentarily, there was a hint of openness gleaming through Takaya’s right eye, but as quickly as it appeared, it faded. He sighed softly, and nodded instead.

“You are truly impressive. Spot-on.....” muttered Takaya.

“This is the product after one full week of ceaseless work. All thanks to Kada for incessantly pushing me to the limits.”

The dark circles under his eyes were apparent. It seemed that within the clan, an opitician did exist. This was the so-called the “specialist” as referred by Reijirou.

“If there is anything amiss, just let me know.”

“I see, will do then.”

“Are you able to use any spiritual power now ? “

Nakagawa was aware that Takaya was undergoing training. Takaya continued to feign incapable of such an ability.

“I’m simply incompetent for such a task, completely unable to do it.”

“You’ve the physique and potential. Both Kada and I, are looking forward to it.”

Takaya signed before adding on a “Really?” As his mood was lifted, he stayed on. He knew that it was a matter of time before he was found out. As for Ushio, an omen was yet to appear.

“By the way, has anything happened to Kusama and the rest ? They seem to be in some arguments of sorts. Are they in disagreement? ” Takaya asked.

Kusama had been behaving coldly towards Reijirou recently. As it was outright apparent, Takaya noticed. Nakagawa sighed before affirming it.

“There, they go again. Well, they do quarrel once in a while, but in general they trust each other deeply.”

It was a disparity unexpectedly deeply ingrained, that could not be easily dismissed by the mere sentence of ‘they do quarrel once in a while..’

“Both of them died in the Urado Uprising. After they re-possessed, they formed the Redwhales. We could say that they’re the founders. They have been fighting hand in hand, together all this while. They managed to seize Tosa from the hands of spirits of Aki and Ichijou. But, there exists an unresolved mutually incompatible issue.”

“Mutually incompatible issue ?”

“In the world of Kusama, Chousokabe-sama is of the highest regard. So much so, that he has fully devoted his service to Chousokabe-sama as the road to fame. He had even told us that the one who accorded recognition to the Ichiryō gusoku as well as the one who gave us a comfortable life, was none other but, Chousokabe-sama. And so he is our Lord etc…..”

“Doesn’t Kada feel the same ?”

“Slightly differently,” Nakagawa added.

Reijirou was not devoted to Chousokabe. Although he was determined to increase the influence of the Redwhales, he was indifferent to the matters of Chousokabe. It started off as a disparity in opinion, but with the recent issues at the frontlines, it soon escalated into a deep crack.

“Hmm… it’s not that they don’t get along well, but occasionally such a problem does make both parties unhappy.”

(So, this is the case)

The two, probably had started off with different motivating factors while involved in the Urado Uprising. After the initial turbulences of forming the Redwhales, and establishment of structures, the difference in their opinions and approaches became significant. This was not unexpected.

(If would be good, if the crack does not appear.)

“Hi ! I see, you’re here, Nakagawa.”

Reijirou came into the room.

“I’ve brought over the glass bound by incantation for Ougi,” explained Nagakawa.

“Already completed ? Good job. Ougi, this shall solve you the problem of having to avoid people.”

“I don’t feel especially alienated.”

Turning away, Takaya plainly lamented. He further added that it was only due to personality differences. Reijirou and Nakagawa glanced at each other momentarily.

“You’re still the same, such a stubborn man. Don’t you afraid of being isolated?”

Takaya did not reply, but continued staring out of the window. Silence. It was his uncommunicative behaviour that caused the Redwhales to waver. Reijirou sighed, but was not surprised.

“Well then, don’t push yourself too hard. But don’t you underestimate us. And, do be a little proud of your body again, would you ?”

With a surprise look, Takaya turned around at them. What did they imply by being ‘proud’ ?

“Didn’t you lose your fighting spirit because of your poisonous body ? Objectively, you can see yourself as a scorpion, and the poison is meant to protect yourself. Even if you can’t use your spiritual power like Ushio does, you can still kill your enemy through the poisonous eye. This is one very potent power and you can view it as a talent that no other people have.”

“You said it’s a talent? ”

“Yes. As long as you remain in the Redwhales, that poison of yours is a ‘specialized skill’. It’s not just a harmful weapon but a very useful one indeed.”

Takaya was bowled over by Reijirou’s positive and pro-active reasoning. It had never occurred to him to view the matter in that light.

“You should be a little more proud of yourself, be more confident, and don’t hide yourself in one corner. You might have ended up this way, but you’re still a good man.”

Reijirou was the first person to see through Takaya’s pessimism. Nakagawa was nodding along in agreement with Reijirou’s words, periodically interjecting with a “Good, good….”

“……anything wrong ?”

With a nasal voice, Reijirou added.

“You certainly can hide…….well, forget it. What do you think of the mood of the Redwhales? As a stranger, you should be able to sense it better than us. Have you been bullied ?”

Though he was not bullied, but was still being scorned by some. This was not something unusual; it was something that could have happened anywhere.

“We may not have the time to act as a mediator to help you intervene, but do let us know if you do encounter any problem. Of course, there’ll be some who will occasionally over-react or act excessively. It’s just simply that the people around here are more open and true to their opinion !”

This was also the source of power for the Redwhales. Perhaps, it was a much preferred culture than having the people secretly acting behind one’s back, hindering others.

They heard someone shouting and running nosily towards them. It was Ushio who had just completed the day’s training.

“Ougi…….! I’ve finally made it. I’m also able to foresee.”

He was all smiles, like a child jumping about in joy, as he dashed into the room. The way he rushed to Takaya and reported the matter out-and-out, one could hardly tell that he was in fact, older than Takaya. Reijirou was dumbfounded.

“You did well.”

“Oh yes, if I continue and progress, in no time, I’ll regain my memories and master the ability to use incantation.”

He was overjoyed and pleased to the point of being bigheaded, and indeed, his spiritual energy had increased. His previously loosely dispersed energy had been regulated, and was more focused and concentrated, emitting a powerful presence.

“Let me show it to you ! Try using a cigarette to burn me, try it, try it. Now, I won’t be burnt at all !”

Ushio tore open his shirt and revealed his chest, an impatient attempt to show the results of his training. His exposed chest was full of burnt marks. Without hesitation, Reijirou lighted a cigarette and pressed it onto Ushio’s chest. As he did it, he kept uttering “wow, wow, wow”. Although the cigarette was pressed firmly on Ushio’s chest for a couple of seconds, it left no burnt mark. On further examination, they found no hint of redness.

“See ! How ?! If I want do it, I can make it !”

Reijirou snorted.

“This is completely insufficient.”

Tilting his head sideways, Ushio asked, “What do you mean ?”

Reijirou crossed his muscular arms before replying,

“I’ve specially came over to inform you that we’ve decided to let you guys participate in real combat.”

“Do you really mean it ?”

“Yes. This shall be your first mission. Together, we’re going for ‘star plundering’! ”

***

Soon, the whole troop was gathered, and within the administration hall, were about fifty members of the Redwhales. Reijirou started explaining the details of the ‘star plundering’ plan.

“This is a battle equivalent to getting hold of the key to Shikoku.”

Kusama started his exaggerated opening speech. Both Ushio and Takaya were at one corner of the room listening to Kusama’s speech. Unperturbed, they continued whispering to each other, “’star plundering’ ? Are they trying to play Sumo wrestling ?”

“As this mission is critical to us, any misstep is detrimental. I hope all of you be more focused, and give your best, alright? ……..As for the battle, we shall have the few elites to initiate an ambush. Now, I shall read out the ten selected names to be part of the raid. For the remainder, it shall function as defending and back-up troop.”

Reijirou was the first name read out, followed by Eikichi and Samanosuke. Kusama, himself was naturally included in the list. Seven other names were chronologically mentioned and among them were ‘Muto Ushio’ and ‘Ougi Takaya’.

“Yes….Yes……..!”

Ushio’s reply was being drowned in the loud murmuring of confusion in the room.

“Please be quiet.”

Though Kusama raised his voice, he was unable to stop the chaos. The crowd was grumbling in displeasure of having a new face and a modern man in the elite troop.

“Please be quiet. The decision has been made. It’s final.”

“I can’t comprehend the decision ! Kusama!”

The young man who shouted crudely was Yoshimura.

“Isn’t this strange ? If this is such an important battle, aren’t you suppose to choose those that have abilities and capabilities? Why’re you selecting someone who can’t even fully use his own spiritual power ?”

“If you want Ushio to succeed and achieve results, then he needs the experience. This is the fastest way. Undeniably, Ushio has a lot of potential.”

“Even if this is the case, this is too critical a battle for THAT man to participate !”

Intentionally, Yoshimura pointed his finger sharply at Takaya.

“Isn’t Ougi just a modern man of no abilities and can’t do anything ? Moreover, he has only one eye. By having him in the elite troop at the frontlines, aren’t you creating your own hindrance? Why? I just can’t understand the rationale !”

“You said he can’t do anything?”

The one who interrupted was Reijirou.

“Darn you. All of you are just a bunch of ignorant brats. You know nothing…… This man here, is much more capable than those troops there. He can kill someone just by looking at the person.”

“You said that he can kill someone by just looking……?”

“Ougi, ” Reijirou called upon Takaya from the front, gesturing him to remove his eye-patch. Every single person in the room turned around. All eyes were immediately on Takaya. Till date, other than Nakagawa, no one had seen his other eye. Takaya was in a dilemma as he was opposed to revealing the poisonous eye to everyone. Reijirou continued hastening him.

“What’re you doing ? Show it to them -- the evil red eye of yours. If they still don’t understand, I shall personally let them comprehend.”

Takaya was annoyed. Reijirou was probably still unaware of the power beheld by the eye. Did he mean to use him as an experiment now ? Everyone was staring at Takaya with fear, leaving him with no option but to oblige Reijirou’s request. Takaya sighed. Reluctantly, he removed his eye-patch.

Commotion erupted through the room.

Revealed before them was the left eye. Involuntarily, Kusama stared at it.

“It’s a bloody red eye.”

The hue of bright red was unusual. Soon, commotion gave way to silence. Feeling like an exhibiting object on display, Takaya was uneasy and miserable.

“If it’s red, then it’s like a rabbit’s. Look at Yoshimura then, Ougi.”

Takaya looked away, refusing to look at anyone. But Reijirou was firm, pressing on in a harsh tone.

“Look at me with that eye.”

Unable to tolerate it any further, as if to rebel against the pressure closing on him, Takaya stared at Reijirou sharply.

Stung by the sudden power of the evil eye, Reijirou felt weak. He was hit point-blank -- his brain felt like oozing out. He groaned as he staggered backwards unsteadily.

“Reijirou ! Kada !”

The horrified Kusama and Yoshimura ran forward. By utilising his power, Reijirou managed to steady himself and stood up. But as he rubbed his nose, his hand was stained with sticky dark red blood.

“…….Look at his…..all of you ! It’s just a flicking instant, and this is the effect. He is an amazing man.”

There was muttering, and gasping throughout the whole room. It had transformed into fear. Everyone stared at him. Repulsed, Takaya turned away.

“You can view him as a very powerful weapon. He is not our burden.”

There was still a minority who had yet to figure out what had just transpired. However, everyone, be in confused or convinced, accepted the decision. In order to soothe the mood of fear and confusion, Kusama stood up again.

“I shall now …….explain the “star plundering” plan once more.”

Takaya and Ushio had earlier heard the details from Reijirou.

---- shall steal the ‘star’ sealed in the granite house.

---- ‘star’? Is it referring to the star from the sky?

---- once upon a time, Koubou-dashi had sealed a ‘star’ in a granite house. We shall steal that particular ‘star’.

The conversation started from an incredible legend in Awa, originated from a place known as Shoukoku-ji(2) (ie Star-valley shrine) in Katsuura-shi, further south of Tokushima. It was rumoured that Koubou-dashi, while in the midst of asceticism, used his power to yank an evil star from the sky to earth, and had it sealed in a granite house. It was a star that brought misfortunes to the people.

It was also rumoured that the evil star would beam unexpectedly in certain days, releasing rays of red light. Strongly and barbarous it would twinkle in the sky, making itself noticeable even in broad day light, frightening the villagers. Once the star started to flicker, hurricanes and earthquakes followed, and eventually extreme famine and plague wrecked havoc to the lives of the villagers, creating great miseries.

Then, the young Koubou-dashi ie Kuukai, had just arrived in Awa to practice asceticism. He witnessed the misfortunes created by the red evil star befalling on the innocent people. Forbidding to allow such disasters to perpetuate further, he voluntarily proceeded to discipline that evil star. He forcefully dragged it down to earth with his power, cast it into a rock, and locked it out in the granite house beneath the waterfall. It was also the very same place where he meditated. Disasters were eventually brought under control.

---- A lot of villagers died because of it. Hence, this very star is known as ‘Retsumyousei(4)’.

(‘Retsumyousei(4)…………’)

Takaya was all attentive, as this was one legend that he heard before.

That granite house was actually in existence, currently located in the courtyard of Shoukoku-ji(2) of Katsuura-shi in Tokushima. The ‘rock’ had been enshrined as an object of worship within it.

---- The ability to drag a star to earth. Koubou-dashi is indeed an amazing person.

---- It’s probably because of such a legend that transformed him into a super-human.

---- But, is that thing really a star ? I mean that rock.

It was actually classified as a stony meteorite. But there were many tales associating the evil star -- from a tale about the appearance of a super new star to tales about a comet etc. It was common that one linked disasters to any abnormality of the sky.

---- the Retsumyousei(4) possesses enormous power. If we can utilize that power, we can overthrow this country.

It was not infrequent that meteorites were used as a base for various kinds of spell. This had occurred several times in history. According to Reijirou, it was Koubou-dashi who had sealed it in the granite room, to prevent the power of the star from being abused.

That Shoukoku-ji(2) was in the hands of Sogou’s army. The Sogou was one of the branch units of the Miyoshi clan that captured Awa. It was also an old enemy of Chousokabe. As the Miyoshi clan was clipped and restricted by Oda, so in actuality, Awa was within the territory controlled by Oda.

---- We must never allow Retsumyousei(4) to be taken by Oda. We must steal the evil star, use its power, and force Oda out of this place.

Retsumyousei(4) possessed enormous power that could be flexibly manipulated by its user. It was a dream weapon for the Redwhales which currently lacked an absolute strategy in its warfare.

---- Shoukoku-ji(2) is heavily guarded by the Sogou army. So the only means is to use unorthodox power to weaken them before launching the assault from our elite unit. I’ll let all of you attack from the enemy lines too.

“Gear up and get ready, Ougi.” Reijirou shouted.

---- This shall be your first mission. Follow me.

(Oda Nobunaga……)

Takaya’s heart turned heavy. The battle had been decided to be the day after tomorrow.

***

“It’s almost time, Ougi.”

It was dinner time, the night before the battle. As usual, Takaya was having dinner by himself, far away from the rest of the crowd, in one of the tables at the extreme corner of the canteen. Nakagawa walked over and sat beside him. He was very worried and concerned about Takaya as the later seemed to be completely shunned. The gravity of alienation was much more serious than before.

“You’re still wearing that eye-patch again? Haven’t I made you the personalized contact lens ? ”

“I hate it when they stare at my red eye.”

“They’ll get used to it in a few days. Curiosity probably will last only a few days. ”

Takaya ate his fish silently -- looking morose and sulking. Nakagawa too, ate his dinner quietly, besides Takaya.

“Kusama has very high expectation on Muto; he has to stay back for some additional and special training.”

Probably it was Ushio’s nature to be easily deceived. He had now begun singing praises about Kusama claiming that the later was an unexpected good person. Gradually, his intention to help Kusama superseded any remaining enthusiasm in recovering his memories.

“You should never leave Kada and the rest in any circumstances. As long as you stick to them, you will be protected. I sincerely hope that you will not be hurt.”

Takaya did not need any protection. He knew he still had to proceed with the assigned mission, but he was completely unmotivated. All he could manage was to punctuate his acknowledgement with an uninterested “hmmm” response at some appropriate points in the conversation.

“It’s supposed to be an assault, right? I’ll be in their way if I go. But again, you don’t have to worry. Reijirou and the rest are true to what they claimed; they are both courageous and honorable. Being part of the Ichiryō gusoku, it has been my desire to learn from them,” said Nagakawa.

“Really? Is that so ? ” Takaya thought to himself.

They certainly looked more tenacious than some thugs and bandits. As he was reflecting, a man appeared from nowhere, knocked into him, right from his back, and a bowl of soup spilled all over him. Nakagawa was shocked.

“You……are you alright ?!”

“Oh…I’m so sorry.”

It was Yoshimura, the man who rebuked Takaya at yesterday’s gathering. He did not appear apologetic.

“Yoshimura, what do you think you’re doing ?!”

“Well, I did not see him. Nobody asks him to eat around here.”

He appeared to have done it intentionally. He was venting his anger for not being selected into the elite unit.

“Kada is way too much; putting up such a good show for the sake of such a scum.”

“You said -- a good show?”

“To kill just by a stare ? What the heck ! He’s just able to suck up, that’s all.”

Takaya stopped the furious Nakagawa who was about to refute.

“Ougi, don’t get carried away. It just happens that the muddle-head Kada likes you. You are just a modern man, and yet you like to bask in the limelight. Don’t blame me; blame yourself if you get hurt here. Remember that.”

Without a word, Takaya cleaned his shoulder and back. The nonchalant attitude irritated Yoshimura further. Angrily he kicked at one of the legs of the table, before storming off.

“Yoshimura ! What kind of attitude is this?! “

Nakagawa stood up and shouted furiously. However, Yoshimura and his gang had already left. The soy sauce and dishes were spilled all over the place.

“I’m so sorry about those darn fellows, Ougi.”

“Probably, the elite team means a great deal to them; So, not having been selected really vexes them. It’s alright, it doesn’t really bother me.”

The reality was that he had been the target of hatred since the day before. The more ambitious a person was, the more jealousy was provoked. This place was akin to the Bōsōzoku.

“I’m taking my leave now, for a change of clothes.”

Having said that, he tidied up his table and left.

Takaya was allocated a single room. It was originally a storeroom, only a few foot-wide. It was a small room but Takaya was contented. They could have given him this room as he looked pathetic living in a tent. However, single rooms were normally assigned to the cadre only. This further provoked Yoshimura.

He took a bath at the same time. After the bath, he met someone unexpectedly along the corridor. He was Akutagawa. It appeared to be the only person who took meals in his own personal single room. He was a man who rarely appeared in a crowd, someone with a low profile in the Redwhales. He greeted Takaya.

“You seem to have unpleasant encounters here.”

He was present in yesterday’s meeting, but did not utter a single word throughout the whole event.

“It must have been very miserable to be an unwilling object of public display, right? Kada is a rather insensitive person who cannot grasp human emotions and feelings.”

Akutagawa appeared to be using his spiritual sensing power scrutinizing Takaya’s body.

“Both you and Ushio are likely to take a turn for the better. Just forge ahead.”

“……….is it? Well, thanks!”

“But it’s better that you choose your acquaintance carefully.”

Takaya’s heart skipped a beat.

“What do you mean?”

“There will be some occasional troublesome fellows that put Kusama on the spot.”

In a coaching-like manner, Akutagawa articulated his view calmly.

“He can’t even understand people of your level and yet he is so full of himself. He has mistakenly assumed that the Redwhales belongs to him. He is part of the regiment, but yet he is doing whatever he pleases, akin to be above laws. He doesn’t even realize that he is gradually alienated by the rest. It’s best you distance yourself from him.”

“Who are you referring to?”

Akutagawa did not mention any name.

“Is it Kada you are talking about ?”

He smiled, in the place of a nod.

“He seems to think highly of you. However, do be careful with him. He is just the kind of person who exploits on everything. Well, for you own sake, just be careful.”

From a distance, there was a voice calling Takaya. It was Nakagawa who had just finished his meal. Akutagawa gave Takaya a gentle tap on the shoulder before disappearing into the direction of the corridor.

“Oh…it was Akutagawa. Anything important from him? “

“………nothing in particular.”

“Are you heading to Kada’s place ? I’m actually looking for him. Shall we go together ?”

Due to Takaya’s condition, he was unable to use the public bath. He had been using Reijirou’s bathroom. Reijirou might have been somewhat egocentric, but he certainly did not appear as perilous as what Akutagawa claimed.

(Is there any reason behind this………?)

While walking along the corridor, Nakagawa brought up an interesting subject.

“Well there have been various tales relating the evil star of Shoukoku-ji(2), but there is one that claims that it is actually a good star.”

“?..........good star?”

“Ya, it was formerly a companion to the humans of this earthly world. Have you heard of the Koshin(1) belief ?”

According to the Koshin(1) belief, it is rumoured that there are “three worms” in the human body which will dutifully report the emotions and thoughts, be it good or evil, of the respective human they inhabited, to the Heaven on every Koshin day. The one capable of eating these worms is Shōmen-Kongō, a fearsome deity with bluish face and many arms. Henceforth, for those who do not wish to have their secrets revealed, in particular those who have committed misdeeds or been harbouring evil intentions, will make an offering to the Shōmen-Kongō deity.

“It’s similar to this. That star was the companion of the humans, preventing the “three worms” from ascending and reporting human misdeeds to the Heaven. When it came to light, the enraged Heaven transformed the star into an evil star of misfortunes to the humans.”

“The star was miserable as it continued witnessing its own red beams bringing disasters to the humans. It begged Kūkai to drag itself down to earth and crystrallise it into a fossil.”

“It’s such a sad tale. The star was actually harming those that it intended to protect in the first place. It was a torture that even a star couldn’t take.”

Quietly, Takaya listened. Although he did not share the same sentiment, the story sounded parallel to his own fate. Nakagawa seemed to see through him.

“You certainly don’t have to become a fossil !”

They heard voices of argument as they approached Reijirou’s room.

“It sounded like Kusama…………”

Without warning, the door was violently thrown open, and out stormed Kusama. As he walked out, he was cursing loudly and angrily.

“I meant it. It’s ‘No’!. I don’t agree with you!”

“Please listen to me. The revival of Nobuchika can be any other time. At this moment, we should focus on Hakuchi ; seizing Hakuchi should be our primary target !”

In an intense voice, Reijirou ran after Kusama, grabbing hold of his arm.

“Oda has already made his move. We can no longer be so indecisive. If we still do not take the opportunity to seize the Hakuchi, it will be too late.”

“You completely missed the meaning of Ichiryō gusoku, Reijirou!”

Kusama brows were firmly locked as he yelled at Reijirou.

“What do you mean by ‘any other time’ ? Our number one priority, our most important task, is the revival of Chousokabe-sama. If we lose our Lord, what’s left is nothing. My wish is to have Nobuchika re-assumed his throne in the soonest, to raise the flag of Chousokabe once more. Have you forgotten that this has been our primary motivation to fight ?”

“Do listen to me, Kusama! You have been overly obstinate about Chousokabe’s restoration ! “

“It’s you who are not giving due respect to Chousokabe !”

Kusama shook off Reijirou’s grasp forcefully.

“All shall head back to Tosa immediately after the battle. Retsumyousei(4) is meant for Chousokabe’s sake. It is for restoring the empire of Chousokabe-sama.”

Although Reijirou called after Kusama at the top of his voice, Kusama, in full stride, stormed off in a rage. Not once did he turn around. Reijirou, who was still seething, sighed deeply. Both Takaya and Nakagawa stood here speechless. Soon, Reijirou noticed the two.

“You are here ?”

“Has it to do with the issue of Hakuchi, Kada?”

“Umph” was the reply as he nodded.

“Hakuchi-jou(ie Hakuchi city) is a location in Tokushima Prefecture, a place that passes through the valley of Tosa, a major cross-junction that links up Iyo, Sanuki and Awa province. It was originally a very important location, and it is now an interchange of Tokyo’s railway. Technically, if we can control this place, it is equivalent to taking control of the whole Shikoku. If we want to stop Oda, we must take hold of this place as soon as possible.”

“He attaches too much importance to Chousokabe-sama. He just can’t comprehend the urgency of the matter. If we are unable to steal the star, we won’t be able to get hold of Hakuchi, and if Hakuchi is being captured or controlled, then Tosa will eventually be seized by some outsiders !”

He cursed before giving the wall a kick.

“The Redwhales does not belong to Chousokabe. He just doesn’t get it, and turns a deaf ear to all my words. The root cause of all these issues comes from that fellow. It is that fellow that instigates Kusama.”

Takaya did not catch the soft mumbling of “I’ll not give up” by Reijirou. He could sense that the crack between the two had reached an irreparable stage.

With a cold gaze, Takaya looked on at Kusama, whose form disappeared into the stairways.

***

In was in the middle of the night, when Takaya heard the knocking of door of his room.

“Are you still awake ……..?”

It was Ushio. Like a child, softly he opened the door, gradually and carefully he stuck his head out. He was currently residing with the rest in a big room and had quietly sneaked out while the others were asleep.

“ I can’t sleep…..can I talk to you ?”

Before Takaya agreed, he was already in the room, lying beside Takaya. It was rare for insomnia to strike one who slept like a log most of the time.

“Are you worried about tomorrow’s battle ?”

“…..I don’t know what’s happening. I just feel very alert and can’t sleep. All I want is to talk to you.”

It could be otherwise. The big room was full of loud snores, and so probably he could not sleep. Ushio laughed at his own deduction. The room might have been big, but he could not find a peaceful slot to reflect his thoughts and talk his heart out. It was the first time since they met that Ushio was lying with Takaya, staring at the claustrophobic ceiling as they talked.

“Aren’t you nervous at all ? Not afraid ?”

Holding his knees close to his body, Takaya replied, “Nothing to fear.”

“Is this the same as hoodlums?”

Ushio sighed. The fact was, he was not clear of the reason for joining the battle.

“Well, you don’t know much because you are not mixing with them. Kusama, really, is not a bad person. During training, Iwata might have been extra mean and harsh, but he has his unexpected pleasant side too. I had initially thought they were a bunch of suspicious weird fellows !”

“But again, it is still weird.”

“Well, though they said they are from the era of the Warring States, I just don’t find any significant difference. Don’t you think so? I may often find myself unable to comprehend their conversations, but other than that, be it at times of joy or sadness, or the way they criticize and complain, they are the same as modern men. And if you hear the way they talk about women, I assure you won’t associate them as spirits.”

After moving in to the big room, Ushio appeared happy as he enjoyed listening to various interesting daily conversations of his roommates.

“They may often fight, but they are a truthful lot. I really envy their frankness; out rightly showing displeasure if they are unhappy; even to the extent of picking on each other. It’s just like baring one’s naked heart. Well, when I think about it -- it occurs to me that I don’t have such friends.”

He was smiling. Ushio might have been approachable and affable to everyone, but he did not have a close confidant. His inferior complex arising from loss of memories lied deep-rooted in his heart, always turning into an invisible wall separating him out from the rest.

“Haven’t you blended in completely ?”

Takaya was mumbling to himself.

“Aren’t you their companion by now ?”

Ushio appeared momentarily in contemplation.

“…..do you find it strange that I get along so well with spirits ? I may not be able to mix well with modern men, but I really enjoy the company of these people here. They are talking about capturing Shikoku, about being serious etc etc. It really sounds like hooligans. Well, I mean, can’t men like us be devoted to a cause ? Can’t we get enthusiastic so that our blood boils with ecstasy?”

Ushio stopped. A realization suddenly struck him.

“Please don’t be mistaken. It’s not because that they said that I was the same as them - about me being dead once - that I’m able to relate to them. I have never accepted or admitted them on this basis! “

He was angrily denying it despite the fact he was gradually inclining towards them.

“On second thought, I really don’t mind continuing being with them. It such a tough issue.”

“….If this is the case, then stay with them.”

Ushio was surprised as he stared at Takaya.

“You always desire a home. So, this fits you perfectly, right? I’m sure it doesn’t matter to you that they are spirits. And since it does not matter, then just stay! ”

“Ougi ! You……..?”

Takaya ----- did not reply.

“Am I right to say that companionship only depresses you ? You hate to be mingle and fit into a group? ” Ushio added.

“You are here to tell me to ‘get out’, to join those fellows, to be their representative ? ”

“No, no..this is not what I meant…………”

Ushio lowered his voice a little, almost whispering.

“………you don’t have anyone like that……..right? “

“ ? ”

“No, right ?! You don’t have anyone who creeps into your room and talks to you in the middle of the night, right ?”

Shocked. Takaya stared at Ushio. With back facing Takaya, Ushio seemed to be sulking.

“Who do you think is the one who dragged you here ? Despite your reluctance, I still force you here. I’ve never really asked for the reason behind your choice of solitude. It appears that I’m making you miserable by compelling you to come along with me.”

“But……”

Ushio wanted Takaya to stay.

“…….Although you don’t really talk to me much. But when I crave for someone to talk to, you would lend me your listening ear. Just like right now, in the middle of the night, you didn’t reject me, but only patiently listening to me. That’s all I need. I’m satisfied. You don’t have anyone similar to me…..even at this point, right? “

He was pleading with Takaya. Devoid of confidence, Ushio clutched his body, lowered his head, and shrunk his body into a tight coil.

“…….You don’t have to worry. Temporarily I won’t leave this place.”

In an instant, Ushio’s body uncoiled and sprang up.

“Anyway, I won’t have to worry about meals when I’m here,” Takaya added.

“Really ? Have you decided to stay ?! “

The worries on Ushio’s face were all gone and cheerfully, he smiled.

“I thought, with Yoshimura giving you so much problem, you would choose to leave ! Ha…ha haha…..Have you really decided ? That’s fantastic !”

Ushio and Yoshimura shared the same big room. He had been intensely criticizing Takaya. Since they first met, he had thought poorly of Takaya. When the aloof Takaya kept to himself, it agitated him further. He had been mumbling sentences like ‘Don’t you dare to be snobbish, you are just a new recruit.” The incident at the meeting sealed his detest towards Takaya. While everyone seemed to be directing one’s hatred at Takaya, Ushio was being treated relatively kindly. This made Ushio extremely guilty.

Though it was irritating issue, Takaya had no intention to leave immediately.

“Well, if that is the case, then just stay on and continue keeping me company forever. I’m your buddy, so even if……the rest of them…… alienate you….. I won’t … leave you alone…because……….”

It was hardly audible at the end of the sentence. Takaya took a peep. Ushio who was under the quilt cover, slumbering breath aloud, was already fast asleep.

(Have the cheek to tell me that he was all alert !)

He might have been bothersome, but if he would to catch a cold, it would be even more bothersome. Takaya pulled a blanket over the sleeping Ushio. While doing it, he sensed light streaming in through the window behind his back. Turning around, he noticed a slender new moon fluttering high above the sky.

Takaya gazed at it in a daze.

“No, I can’t……promise that.”

With self-ridicule, he laughed. He recalled the days when he was in high school -who was the person that had been yearning for a home ?

What was he doing? He had lost his aspiration. He could only float aimlessly, going where the current was leading him.

Here, at this place.

What exactly was he doing?

Leaning his head against the cold window plane, he closed his eyes.

(Did the same white light stream into that room……?)

Out there, the wind was howling. And, the hook-like moon was trying to hide itself behind the shadow of deep mountainous forest.

***

The day of “star plundering” had arrived.

The intelligence report from the informant-squad, had been swiftly conveyed to Kusama. It was learnt that the front-line squad which had infiltrated into Tokushima was ready for ambush.

Just before they set off, they held a last meeting for the elite squad. Takaya and Ushio sat right behind listening to the battle strategy - they were to be spilt into two sub-units, with Ushio and Takaya assigned to Kusama’s and Reijirou’s unit respectively.

Ushio was all excited. Though he had learnt to use his internal energy, he was unable to execute a proper incantation. And yet, he was being selected into the elite squad. Charged with energy and brimming with aspirations, he was eager for an accomplishment.

“If we manage to steal the star, we will be part of the Redwhales, right? I will ensure that they admit us !”

The drummed up excitement caught his breath. He detested being at the losing end. He did not want modern men to be labeled as idiots. Hence, he intended to be the first to attack.

“Don’t you underestimate your enemy. They aren’t hooligans of fast cars. They seriously will kill you.”

Takaya who had been indifferent all the while, turned serious and warned Ushio.

“If you are killed right at this place, you’re sacrificing for nothing. Isn’t it?”

“You’re right, Ougi !”

Turning around, Takaya noticed Iwata Eikichi at the stairs.

“We had no intention to let you achieve anything in this battle. All you need to do is just follow after us. We certainly don’t want to lose two of our bright talents right from the beginning !”

“By saying that, does that mean you are afraid that we will steal the limelight away from you ?”

“What are you saying, Muto ? You are one damn stubborn fellow. Take your words back and reserve it to the days when you are independent. Forget it…….and you, Ougi - don’t ever die.”

“Umph,” Takaya responded. Although it did not matter to him where he was to be killed, but undeniably, he did not want to die in this ambush.

“Most importantly…….any issue with the squad leaders ?” Takaya asked.

“You don’t have to worry on such things !”

Eikichi pointed to the direction above the stairs. Both Kusama and Reijirou were engaged in a deep discussion, finalizing the finer details of the battle.

“Wherever it belongs, whatever it is, they are very clear-headed on such distinctions. It has been clearly defined by both of them. Occasionally, they may have “some light arguments” , but they are still the perfect ensemble in a squad. They are just like a pair of door guardians for the Redwhales.”

He probably meant Niōmon(3). But the night before, it was definitely no “light arguments”…………

Swiftly, the discussion concluded between Kusama and Reijirou and they descended the stairs.

“Did you sleep well last night ?” asked Reijirou.

“Not a bit,” Takaya replied

“Oh? So the nerves got the better of you and you couldn’t sleep ?”

The fact was Takaya’s bed was hogged by Ushio, and he had no where to sleep.

“Remove your contact lens. In this way, you can kill as many enemies as you wish.”

“Are you sure this is fine ? I meant for both you and Kusama.”

Reijirou responded with an “Umph” as he gazed towards the direction of the stairs.

“He was just throwing a little temper yesterday. He was no child. You have worried unnecessarily. Anyway, both of you, take this.”

Reijirou passed each of them a crystal-like jade with the size of a table-tennis ball. Within it, there was a seed character “Bai” from Bishamonten(5). Takaya felt little unease and troubled.

“This is sealed with the power of Bishamonten(5) war god. It is a jade that can be turned into armor. If you recite the incantation, the armor will possess your body, transform into a shield to fend off the spell of the enemy. If you throw this at the enemy, it will explode like a bomb !”

With full enthusiasm, Reijirou taught them the incantation. As Ushio was determined to learn it by heart, he kept mumbling the words repeatedly though this rigid tongue. It was almost unbearable to Takaya. With lips firmly sealed, he refused to recite it.

“We shall fall-in two hours later. Relax. I’m going ahead with my preparation.”

Reijirou left. Takaya passed his armor-jade to Ushio.

“What? If you don’t take this along, it will be dangerous, right ?”

“I don’t need this. In anyway, I’m agile, I can escape easily.”

He forced Ushio to accept it. Takaya was concerned that he might accidentally spill the beans and expose his power if he had such a jade with him. Even if that was the case…

(One should not overlook the capability of the Redwhales.)

The ability to harvest the power of god and sealed it into an armor should have come from knowledge of making Bishamonten(5) sabre. The contact lens they made for Takaya had used the same principles too. It was certainly worthy as the homeland of Kūkai. But this was not the time to be awed.

(The potential of these people, is definitely above my expectation.)

Takaya felt that he should no longer view them as just a disorganized troop. Their organization structure and capability had far exceeded the Vengeful Resentful Warriors. They were definitely not those lowly messy gangs.

(Certainly impressive!)

This was evident in their battle strategies and power.

Suddenly, he diverted his view. Right in the hall, Kusama and Akutagawa Chikamune were discussing some issues, as if confidentially. The advisor cum confidant, Akutagawa would remain behind to protect the place.

Was this known as the original squad ? He appeared to segregate himself from the rest of the members of the Redwhales. According to Nagakawa, Akutagawa only joined the Redwhales at a much later stage. As Kusama and Reijirou were old friends, the language they used with each other were often coarse and direct. But this was different when conversing with Akutagawa. He was accorded respect by Kusama. Suddenly, Takaya noticed that Reijirou was observing them from along the corridor. He sensed the boiling yet cold stare of Reijirou. He was a little concerned.

(Can this be………)

As he walked out, he noticed that the sky was filled with dark clouds, an impending storm was heading their way.

Takaya gazed at the huge mass of dark clouds gathering at Tsurugi-hama. His calm gaze turned razor-sharp.

Another long chapter.

I’ve actually completed this chapter some time back-- immediately after Chapter 5-- but was pending for just one phrase ie ‘毘沙門天’ for more than 10 days.

It’s always so much tougher to work on MoB than the other novels. MOB is so full of references to Japanese historical characters and religions, in particular Buddhism. So, research is required along the way, which stalls the progress. It's worse if you have to research in the original source language (which I, often ended up, staring blankly at the screen …). Nevertheless, I’ve finally found the meaning of ‘毘沙門天’ .

Of course the good side of it is….after 6 months, I’m no longer completely ignorant of Japanase history, geographical locations and culture as well as the various branches of Buddhism ^_^.

Ok, back to the novel….talking about Ushio. Yes, his candid nature is so child-like. The eagerness of showing off the cigarette-butt test, the middle of the night chat….. Takaya is basically stuck with this adult-kid. In fact, later….. Takaya did something seriously against his will….. for the sake of protecting Ushio.

I like Nagakawa. His gentle nature impresses me. As I’ve already read parts of Vol 22, I like him even more.

Btw, I’ve gone back and added the respective chapter-headings of Vol21 and fixed a few minor typo-errors in them.
