April 6, 2010 /PN/ The website WikiLeaks.org released a graphic video Monday showing a U.S. helicopter shooting and killing a Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen (22) his driver Saeed Chmagh (40) and 10 others in a 2007 attack in Baghdad. Two children were also wounded.
WikiLeaks told a news conference in Washington that it acquired encrypted video of the July 12, 2007, attack from military whistleblowers and had been able to view and investigate it after breaking the encryption code.
A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the video and audio were authentic.
The video shows military personnel aboard two Apache helicopters on patrol in Iraq indicating they spot the suspects toting several AK-47s and several RPG's. WikiLeaks contends that the Reuters photographers were only carrying cameras, which the military mistook for weapons. The helicopters circled multiple times before opening fire.
The U.S. Army had rejected Reuters' earlier requests, including ones made under the Freedom of Information Act, to disclose the July 2007 video.
The U.S. Central Command declined to offer immediate comment on the video's release, or to confirm its authenticity, but said it would be issuing a statement.
