This means preparations for Round 3: Black Day will soon be underway! Like the previous rounds, Round 3 will have a short writing period so this post is to get our participants excited not just to read the fics from Round 2: White Day, but to also give you guys some time to prepare yourselves when claiming begins.
In South Korea, Black Day is synonymous with Singles Day! People who did not receive gifts on either Valentine's Day or White Day commiserate over black-colored food, especially jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles).
So how does this relate to our project? From the 11th - 13th of March, we will begin postings for Round 2: White Day. As a participant of Round 3, you will be remixing any one of the fics from Round 2 or any of the unclaimed fics from Round 1: Valentine's Day.
In the case of this project, remixing simply means a fanfiction of a fanfiction. The original fic from Round 1 or Round 2 is your base ingredient so it’s up to you to spice up your concoction! You can give the story an alternate ending (must be bad for Round 3!!), switch narrators so the reader will see Person B’s side of the story instead of only Person A’s, write a prequel or a sequel, change an important plot point, and so on so forth.
However! Bear in mind that you absolutely must keep the general plot the same or the beauty of your remix might be lost. Also, we have an additional rule for you: your remix must have a bad ending. Since it is Singles Day, LET'S BREAK HEARTS AND DROWN OURSELVES IN ANGST, MISERY AND DISAPPOINTMENT WAHAHHAAHHAHAHA ψ(`∇´)ψ
As explained above, a remix can be seen as a fic of a fic. Taking the original as a foundation, you create another story from it, be it from another character’s perspective, what happened before or after the main event, have extra elements, anything goes! As long as you stay true to the original fic - and not go about writing an entirely new fic - you should be good to go!
For 91daes, the only thing that has to stay the same is the basic plotline of the original fic. As majority have voted that they would like to be able to change the pairing of the fic as long as it remains within the ot3, you are able to do that for this challenge. Don't forget that for Round 3: White Day, your fic must end badly or poorly for the characters!
If you're still wondering what remixing is and how to remix, you can go here or here for more information. If you want to read some remixes in the EXO fandom to give you a clearer idea, kpop-ficmix and loveismix are great places to check out.
Some tips on remixing:
First of all, pick a universe. If you decide that you like the universe the original fic is set in, but that it would be better if it happened, say, in a Star Wars AU rather than a Harry Potter AU, change it! As long as you follow the plot, changing the universe is entirely fine.
Second, pick a character. Satisfied with the main characters’ story? Choose someone else, and write the fic from their perspective. Maybe it’s that one glossed over character that you’re intrigued by, or maybe you want to write about how strangers react to the character’s shenanigans. Add an additional character into the mix, or remove one to see how it’ll affect the characters reactions. Again, as long as the original foundation is there, you’ll be okay.
Last, change the period of time. Want to think about what happens before or after the main events? Go ahead! If you want to imagine the character’s unhappy ending - for Round 3, of course! - write what would happen if there's a fallout or missed opportunity! If you want to explore how the characters came to be together, write the prequel! Change the time period, as long as you can link it back to the fic!
If you have any other questions, feel free to approach the Mods! We do have so experience in remixing fics, so if it’s just a quick query as to whether or not you can do something, we’ll be glad to answer. Otherwise, go ahead, go wild, and have fun!
The minimum for each fic is 500 words and the maximum is 5000 words. Due to the short writing period for each round, the mods will not check-in on your progress so please submit on time!
Side and broken pairings are welcomed but all fics must focus on either Suho/Lay, Lay/Chen, Suho/Chen or Suho/Chen/Lay*. Member-centric fics are also welcomed but please have your fics focused on the relationships between our OT3.
You are allowed to include non-EXO celebrities, including (but not limited to) former members, SMTown artists, and Chen Xuedong.
Any fics with possible triggering material/themes must be tagged as such. We do not tolerate dub-con and/or non-con and hope participants will respect this.
You can join Round 3 without joining the previous rounds. You are also allowed to drop out, but the low word count is there to discourage you from doing that!
*Mod A is so desperate for more suchenlay fics that she will mail you fansite photocards of all three of the boys if you write an OT3 fic. Mod R on the other hand, will write you a heartfelt handwritten card, and trust Mod A when she says that getting handwritten mail is very fun.
How do I sign up?
You do it by claiming a fic you’ve read from Round 2 and any unclaimed fic from Round 1! The Claiming Post and spreadsheet will be up on the last day of postings (13th) and will open on the 14th of March along with our Reveals for Round 2!! (੭ु ›ω‹ )੭ु⁾⁾♡
Similar to fic fests, you’ll need to leave a comment on the Claiming Post according to the format given and the mods will get back to you ASAP. All comments are screened to preserve anonymity so don’t go around telling people whose fic you’ll be remixing! Claiming closes on the 5th of April but don’t leave it until the last minute ( ´△`)
Why do you have a max word count? Can I write more than 5000 words?
We put a limit in place because the writing period is less than a month and we want to encourage more participants as well as discourage any drop outs. You’re welcome to write more than the limit provided that you will submit on time. The limit is placed to avoid stress because of time constraints and if that doesn’t apply to you, go ahead and let the words flow!
What if you have more participants for Round 3 than fics?
You sound very confident that we’ll be having more than 19 participants… Regardless! That’s what the claiming is for.
What if you have more fics for Round 3 than participants?
We encourage the writers to submit early and claim another fic if they're interested. It'd be great if we could get all fics remixed but it's not a life and death situation haha.
I’ve never joined a fic challenge/written fanfic/remixed a fic before but I’m interested.
YES HELLO! Ahem. Anyway, yes hi please don’t be afraid. The mods are amazed with how there are actually first time writers in Round 1 and we’ve done our very best to guide them. It’s normal to feel intimidated, but everyone’s got to start off somewhere. Our mentions and DMs on twitter are always open as is our email so if you have any questions go ahead and ask ^^ We love enthusiastic learners (∩˃o˂∩)♡
I see you that guys will be posting a collection on AO3. Can I post my fic myself?
Yes! You are welcome to but only after informing us of your decision to avoid confusion. Also, we will still require you to submit your fic in the LJ format.
Are you guys seriously mailing the photocards and the letter if I write OT3?
Yes. Definitely. Yes. Some of our participants from Round 1 have already received their pcs at the time this post was written :3
Why did you guys choose to name this suchenlay instead of sulaychen? I don't like it.
Because Chen is the ultimate switch. Just kidding (not really), the mods have been calling it “suchenlay” for as long as we can remember. There’s really not any hidden meanings behind the name choice other than what we’re used to. Please don’t think too much about it or let it detract you from the point of this project which is to celebrate our ot3 by encouraging more fics focusing on them.
Please follow us on twitter @91daes for updates as well as any changes in dates etc. Do contact us there or at 91daesmods@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns!
We are very humbled by the positive response this project has been given. Please spread the word, join us, and get your friends to sign up too!
