Not thinking about it, not thinking about it...

Mar 06, 2007 10:20

My favorite professor and mentor from college once told me that he really enjoys the transitory nature of theatre as an art form. The idea that you can put something up that is beautiful and enjoyable, but that it will eventually be gone and will never be back in quite the same way. I've never been able to enjoy that aspect the way he does. I'm greedy. When something moves me to the extent that The Permanent Way did, I want it to stick around. So, while I'm celebrating the wonderful thing it was, I'm also grieving it a little bit. I miss it. So, I'm not thinking about it. I'm doing a shuffle meme (thanks dylansthinman):

Put your library/mp3 player on shuffle (no skipping! be honest!); click play. Then, answer the questions below.

1.
song: “Have A Heart”
artist: Bonnie Raitt
album this song comes from: Nick of Time
does the song recall any memories for you?: Not really. But I adore this song. It makes me feel happy. Bonnie's voice slays me.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: On the dedicated side, but I don't know a lot of her stuff. I listened to Luck of the Draw obsessively for a while. It might be on my list of desert island albums.
favorite part of lyrics: "Would you stand up, baby, 'cause I want to get a better look / at the big man who couldn't handle the little bit of love you took"
favorite song from this album: This one.
favorite album by this artist: Luck of the Draw

2.
song: "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours"
artist: Stevie Wonder
album this song comes from: Stevie Wonder - The Definitive Collection
does the song recall any memories for you?: Not really memories. Because I work for a dance band company, I've heard this song about 35,000 times. I really wasn't that big of a fan of Stevie before I started working here. I was only familiar with "I Just Called To Say I Love You" Stevie. Turns out, "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" Stevie is a friggin' GENIUS.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Dedicated-ish. Like I said, I'm a relatively recent fan, but I really dig his stuff. Especially his older stuff.
favorite part of lyrics: "Then that time I went and said goodbye / Now I'm back and not ashamed to cry"
favorite song from this album: “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”
favorite album by this artist: This one.

3.
song: "New York Minute"
artist: Don Henley
album this song comes from: The End of the Innocence
does the song recall any memories for you?: This song was featured in (and provided the title for) the West Wing episode "Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail". It's basically the only reason I like this song. The episode contained one of the great instances of the "Sorkin Twist", when Sam is reviewing the pardon request for the grandfather of a friend of Donna's. Everybody assumes he was a patsy accused of treason, but it turns out during the epsisode that it's all true. He's also dealing with the discovery that his dad had been cheating on his mom for years.
Sam: "...This girl's going to find out who her father was!"
Donna: "Sam...you meant 'grandfather'".
*sigh* The good ol' Sorkin twist, when you realize what they've really been talking about the whole time.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Casual
favorite part of lyrics: "Somebody's going to emergency, somebody's going to jail / you find somebody to love in this world you better hang on tooth and nail"
favorite song from this album: "The End of the Innocence"...I like its structure, somehow.
favorite album by this artist: This one, I guess.

4.
song: "Helicopters"
artist: Barenaked Ladies
album this song comes from: Maroon
does the song recall any memories for you?: This whole album reminds me of living in Paducah, Kentucky after graduation. We lived there for a few months; Tanya worked for a big community theatre and I directed a show. It was fun.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Hugely, hugely dedicated. My favorite band.
favorite part of lyrics: "Everybody's laughing while at me they point a finger / A world that loves its irony must hate the protest singer / so I'll be leaving soon"
favorite song from this album: "The Humour of the Situation"
favorite album by this artist: Hard to choose; every song on Gordon is good, but Stunt is like a hit machine.

5.
song: "Whiskey River (iTunes Originals version)
artist: Willie Nelson
album this song comes from: iTunes Originals - Willie Nelson
does the song recall any memories for you?: Not really anything specific. My dad used to play records on Sunday morning, and this kind of makes me think of that.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Casual in that I don't know a lot of his stuff, but I have great affection for Willie.
favorite part of lyrics: "Whiskey river, don't run dry / You're all I've got, take care of me"

favorite album by this artist: I don't really know any of his albums

6
song: "Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)"
artist: Vertical Horizon
album this song comes from: Everything You Want
does the song recall any memories for you?: Eh...not really? Kind of reminds me of our early days in Chicago, because it was on the radio a lot.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Very, very casual
favorite part of lyrics: I don't know, I don't really even know the words.
favorite song from this album: "You're A God"? I don't know.

7.
song: "Freedom '90"
artist: George Michael

favorite part of lyrics: "All we have to do now is take these lies and make them true somehow"
favorite song from this album: This one...don't really know what else is on here.
favorite album by this artist: I don't own any albums, just this song and "Faith"

8.
song: "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted"
artist: Jimmy Ruffin
album this song comes from: Reckless soundtrack
does the song recall any memories for you?: Oh God, does it. This was the most fun soundtrack for any New Leaf show until The Permanent Way. It was also the show with the most affection surrounding it until TPW. God...this isn't helping...
favorite part of lyrics: "What becomes of the broken hearted / who had love that's now departed / I know I've got to find some kind of peace of mind / Maybe"
favorite song from this album: "Dedicated to the One I Love"
favorite album by this artist: By New Leaf? TPW. This one will always be great.

9.
song: "Beggar" (I don't really know the name of the song)
artist: Jason Berger
album this song comes from: Lonely Moutain
does the song recall any memories for you?: Jason and Colby's gig at Martyrs when I first started working for my company. It was amazing.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: Dedicated. He's a fantastic songwriter, can't wait until he finally finishes this album. Colby's apparently taking over, which is good.
favorite part of lyrics: Hmm...I don't know the words to this one as well, and I can't look them up, so..."La la la, la la laaa la laaaaa" (actually in the song)
favorite song from this album: "Trucker's Waltz" or "Cowgirl"
favorite album by this artist: This one (only one)

10.
song: "You Could Make A Killing"
artist: Aimee Mann
album this song comes from: I'm With Stupid
does the song recall any memories for you?: Writing my new play BENEFITS. I listened to a lot of Aimee Mann while writing it.
are you a casual or dedicated fan of this artist?: New fan, but becoming dedicated.
favorite part of lyrics: "Wish I was both young and stupid / Then I too could have the fun that you did / Til it was time to pony up what you bid / So you could make a killing"
favorite song from this album: "Superball" or "Amateur"
favorite album by this artist: This one or Bachelor No. 2
