With all these new things springing up that I have to react to, I need to backtrack a bit. I've been getting busy with other things, huh. But I just watched Bender's Big Score (which I absolutely love) and will soon be watching Justice League New Frontier, the Justice League on The Batman, and the premiere of Spectacular Spider-Man. I may get to see Hal Jordan and Gwen Stacy on the same day! That's a lot (and by the way Matt, please repost the Bender review. You too,
elvenmoon, I read your TZ review, did you do an LJ post about it?).
And also, SNL likes torturing me, apparently, because they enjoy putting on celebrities I've been drooling over. Dude, that is so unfair.
And you know what else is unfair? The Spider-Man event "One More Day". Here is how I took it (spoilers aplenty, seriously, don't read unless you don't know what happened or don't care):
It's no secret that Joe Quesada doesn't like Spider-Man being married. He's attempted to do things about it in the past, but this, this was his idea to "fix" Spider-Man. It seems he's had this planned for a while, which is probably why he let all this crap happen to Peter, like "The Other" and the unmasking and all that.
The idea behind the 4-parter was simple. Because Peter unmasked, he was targeted, May got shot fatally, Peter looked for a way to save her (any way), and the only one who offered to help was Mephisto, who, in exchange, wanted Peter and Mary Jane's marriage.
The build up wasn't bad. It was cool seeing Quesada's art, and I did like the issue where Peter sees possible versions of him who never became Spider-Man. But the final issue? Awful. I mean, Mephisto just says "Yeah, give me your marriage, and I'll save your aunt", basically. And he gives in, basically.
I actually did like the genuine emotion between Peter and MJ when they realized their marriage was going to be undone, but there was no real punch. I mean, it happened just the way you'd think it would (although MJ did whisper something to him, oddly enough), and it was pretty out of character for Peter, too. It was wrong on so many levels.
I'd like to say I'm looking forward to Brand New Day, but I'm not. I loved the Spider-Marriage, but above all else, I do want to read good Spider-Man stories. Dan Slott had an awesome Spider-Man/Human Torch mini-series, so him on ASM is a good thing to me.
Due to some subscription change over, I've only read the first issue of Brand New Day, and I'm not impressed. It doesn't have the fun or, really, anything that I'd consider a strength when it comes to Spider-Man. That may improve with issues, and I'm willing to give it a shot, but, I hate how it was done. Reading it, it doesn't feel like my Spider-Man, just an alternate version of him. I'm not going to like any of his love interests because they're not Mary Jane, and worst of all, they brought back Harry Osborn! That was my FIRST comic book death that I'm so happy wasn't cheapened by his resurrection, and here they are, cheapening it. So many things undone, it doesn't give me hope for this new direction. At the very least, there's only one title, ASM, and that's 3 times a week, and with my subscription, it's only like $1.30 an issue, so I am saving money, for whatever that's worth.
