Film Festival Fun

The Connecticut Film Festival was all week, but I only volunteered for the weekend. All in all, it turned out well.

Yesterday I was at an elementary school. They gave me a shirt and one of those volunteer badges, and they had me sell tickets, DVDs, whatever, out front. I didn't get to see Judy Berlin, but I heard good things (plus it has Julie Kavner it in, when I saw that, I had to suppress my giggle for, like, a solid hour).

Afterwards, though, I got to sit in on the Q&A with the DP (he's won a few awards), so that was fun. The big event for the night was the premiere of the film "Holes in My Shoes" which is about a guy named Jack Beers. He's a 94 year old who lived an incredible life. He was a body-builder, an actor, and he helped build the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, and even stuff they used in the Manhattan Project. Jack actually showed up for the film, and I'm just sitting there thinking about the incredible life he's lead, and he's sitting across the aisle from me. It was pretty amazing.

Today's event was at a small theatre. They were showing their regular films, but they had one screen reserved for film festival stuff. They showed "Hand of God" (about the director's brother, who was molested by a priest when they were kids) and then a collection of shorts. I got to see neither because I was out in the lobby punching tickets, but I didn't mind too much.

I think what I liked the best was being able to talk to the directors. I mean, they were concerned with getting everything ready, and I was just there helping out, it was cool.

I do want to watch more independent films, the kind of stuff I think senordildo likes, but I also want to get involved more too. Maybe once I move to New York I'll have more opportunities to volunteer at things.
