The Best There Is At What I Do
It was tough for me when I graduated from college (spring '04) because I couldn't find a job. I majored in English and minored in film and knew I wanted to go to film school eventually, but I was entering the real world, and I needed money. I was fortunate enough to do the job I was doing at school full-time during the summer after I graduated.
Then it got tough. I had to come back home, where there was even less opportunity. I took an internship at a production company in New York called Lion Television, and that wasn't bad (I even helped on the set of It Takes A Thief). Afterwards I did a temporary thing transcribing a show for the Food Network (which I got paid for, thank goodness).
Soon after I got in touch with a temp agency, and they put me in the legal ethics and compliance department of an auditing company. I'm a research analyst, and the work isn't too hard, but I don't think I'm interested in coming on as an actual employee.
I started another internship in September, working there two days and my other job three days. Hidden Treasures Productions is currently doing a "Secrets of" series of DVD documentaries. The most recent one being Secrets of Angels, Demons, and Masons and the next being Secrets of Mary Magdalene.
I enjoy working there, which is why I don't want to leave. I've been there four months and when we go into production, I can actually be of real use to them and get a ton of experience. The only thing is, working part time has really hurt me financially, and the smart thing to do would be to go back full time in January. But I want experience with something I can really see myself having a career in.
