Completely forgot to talk about this in my last entry. On the subject of Joker Vs. Wonder Woman:
Now, one of the most heated debate topics in JLU (and the DCAU and Batman's love life) is in "This Little Piggy" where Bruce tells Diana that if he has someone special, his enemies would attack him through her. Diana shrugs it off, displaying her strength. Obviously, Wonder Woman's on a strength level much higher than Batman's rogues (she could beat a Killer Croc juiced up on venom AND Man-Bat formula in an armwrestling contest). However, the thing that got to me was, I agree with Batman...yet many people agree with Wonder Woman! Here's my reasoning.
1) Batman's a kind of pessimistic/realistic guy anyway. He's seen Joker nearly kill Superman ("World's Finest") and Ra's Al Ghul nearly kill Superman ("The Demon Reborn"). Plus, the Joker pulled a fast one on Wonder Woman in "Injustice for All". Batman's villains don't screw around!
2) In addition, brute strength doesn't always cut it. Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and the Mad Hatter all have mind control capabilities. Wonder Woman doesn't have any defense for those if they take her by surprise (see "Grudge Match", which, technically, came after "This Little Piggy"). As seen in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Joker has Amazon affecting gas! That's clearly enough reason for Batman to be worried about his villains harming her.
::sigh::
Speaking of The Mad Hatter, how sad is the ending to "Mad as a Hatter"? Original airdate October 12, 1992...19 years later and it still affects me! I liked how the episode ends with a shot of the Mock Turtle.
Which, actually, is what brings me here. I'm reading Tarnished Angel in Astro City. It's pretty good, and I love the chapter on the villain the Mock Turtle (an obvious take on the Mad Hatter). It's funny when he was a kid and hid in a closet trying to get to Narnia and attempting to go head first into a mirror! Ah, poor sap.
Speaking of which, I went back to re-read chapters 9 and 10 of Alice in Wonderland, which is about the Mock Turtle. That guy is in tears...and he used to be a real turtle at some point. I can't help but feel bad for him. Here's a quote:
"I'VE been to a day-school, too," said Alice; "you needn't be so proud as all that."
"With extras?" asked the Mock Turtle a little anxiously.
"Yes," said Alice, "we learned French and music."
"And washing?" said the Mock Turtle.
"Certainly not!" said Alice indignantly.
"Ah! then yours wasn't a really good school," said the Mock Turtle in a tone of great relief. "Now at OURS they had at the end of the bill, 'French, music, AND WASHING--extra.'"
"You couldn't have wanted it much," said Alice; "living at the bottom of the sea."
"I couldn't afford to learn it." said the Mock Turtle with a sigh. "I only took the regular course."
"What was that?" inquired Alice.
"Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with," the Mock Turtle replied; "and then the different branches of Arithmetic-- Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision."
