Comic Con Recap

Jul 31, 2011 23:30

Okay, it's been a week, but I finally recovered, and I had a relatively slow weekend, so now I can talk about some of the highlights of Comic Con.

Also, I can show off my Dark Flash costume!

I drove to San Diego by myself on Thursday since my friends weren't coming until that evening. I got my passes, my bag (Lego Voldemort, although I did hope for Justice League, it was totally random), and then...looked through the guide, wandered around, and found my bearings.

The first thing I did was see the fabled Hall H, I was worried it'd be crowded, and I wanted to get into Sony/Aardman...but when I got in, it was Twilight Q & A. Bleck. I left and came back later, and I got to see stuff from the Pirate Movie and Arthur Christmas. Right after that, Pee-Wee Herman randomly showed up, and he was interviewed by Quint from Ain't It Cool News, and there was a Q & A. I wandered around the floor and then went upstairs for the Warner Bros./Hanna-Barbera cartoons on Blu-Ray. That was cool, plus Paul Dini was there!

Next, I attempted to go to Indigo Hall for Batman: Arkham City, where Paul Dini would be as well along with Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy, but I waited in line for over an hour and didn't make it...bleck. I did get in there for Voltron afterwards, which was neat. More wandering around, some eating, and the last thing I did was see some of the Star Wars Fan Movie Awards. Unfortunately, I didn't stay through the whole thing because I was feeling tired. Even more unfortunately, my friends' car broke down and were delayed, and I wasn't able to check into the hotel without them, so I had to wait in my car. Bleck.

FRIDAY

It took me longer to get in than it did my friends to get their passes, but we met up to get into Star Trek Captains. Moderated by Kevin Smith, William Shatner talked about his new documentary, and Avery Brooks was there as well. It was interesting how they talked about scoring the thing Brooks is a talented pianist and gave this deep speech about the experience of listening to music and when Shatner said "And yet..." Kevin Smith yelled at him and told him not to mess up the most profound thing ever said at Comic Con. Shatner just pretty much agreed with what Brooks said and wanted to add something. And then Scott Bakula came out! He wasn't even on the program, and it was cool the way Shatner said they never even met before the doc. He talked about how all six of the actors had their similarities, even if there are some differences. It was great to see them get along, Shatner being affectionate with both Brooks and Bakula. There was a Q & A, and Shatner led the audience in a "Long Khan" (http://www.thelongkhan.com/). One of the best panels all weekend.

I wandered around some more, didn't make it back into the same room for the Legendary panel, but my friends did. I DID come back for Green Lantern: The Animated Series with Bruce Timm, Giancarlo Volpe, and Jim Krieg, moderated by Sam Register. It was cool, there was a Q & A, and it was somehow half an hour long...because then Conan O'Brien showed up!

They talked about the Flaming C and showed some CG animation. It was hilarious, Conan is great, and he was even making Parallax jokes (because earlier someone asked if Hal would ever become Parallax).

Next was Marvel Anime with Jeph Loeb (who seems to love his Heroes actors), and he talked about G4's anime shows, Wolverine, Iron Man, X-Men, and Blade, which are starting to premiere now. I met up with my friends, and we had dinner in the Gaslamp District.

That was nice, but I missed the first showing of Batman: Year One. I did return to the convention center and waited for it to let out, so I could meet Revelator. It was cool to meet him, and get some Con tips. I also talked to TheVileOne on the phone, but I never met him.

SATURDAY

My big costume day. I was Dark Flash:

The first thing I wanted to do was get into Marvel Television, and I sat with some fans and we geeked out before it started. Jeph Loeb talked about some of the live action Marvel stuff they're trying to get off the ground (Cloak and Dagger, Mockingbird, Hulk) in addition to animation (Hulk again) and Ultimate Spider-Man. Drake Bell was there, which is cool, but he just sounds like Josh Keaton. There's not a huge difference between what we saw and Spectacular Spider-Man anyway, aside from some cut-aways and JK Simmons as Jameson and Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson (which made me geek out a bit). I'm kind of looking forward to it, but Loeb saying it'll be like no other Spider-Man cartoon before it made me roll my eyes. They showed the entire season 2 premiere of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes...yay Fantastic Four!

I went to Cartoon Voices I after that, but I'm going to save that recap until the next entry because I have a lot to say about it (plus there were two).

Afterwards, I finally went to the bathroom (it was not easy!) then headed over to the Indigo Ballroom for the Guild. Felicia Day was losing her voice, but she was as lovely as ever.

More floor time, and then I rounded out the evening with one more bathroom trip and then Star Trek: Between the Cracks and Star Wars Trivia (I had NO IDEA what any of those answers were!). I met up with my friends, and we watched the costume awards from another room. They went to dance for a bit, and I took more pictures, and then we met back at the hotel.

SUNDAY

We went to pre-register for 2012, which was good, but it made me late for Young Justice, and they wouldn't let me in. BLECK!!! Then Cartoon Voices II, and then I met up with my friend Susan, who just came for the day. We ate, went to the fulfillment room (where I made the rookie mistake of trying to cash stuff in the last day, so of course, they were out), and then walked the floor until closing (at about 5). I got some free stuff (not as much as I would've liked), some merchandise (including the first two Darkwing Duck trades), and I was content, although tired.

I managed to make the drive back to LA okay.
