Chapter 1

“Hi, I’m Shim Changmin! What’s your name?”

The little boy grinned as he stuck out his hand enthusiastically. He had seen his parents perform the gesture before and mimicked the action perfectly, anticipating the handshake that would come next. His smile reached his mismatched eyes when the other boy glanced up at him.

“Jung Yunho.”

He answered quietly, ignoring his outstretched hand. His glaze lingered for a few seconds before he lost interest completely, turning back to the object he held in his hand. Changmin’s smile wavered but he sat down anyway, eyeing the variety of toys scattered in front of them.

‘Can I play with you?”

His voice was hopeful as watched the other skillfully maneuver a red fire truck. Changmin noticed the slight frown of discomfort on Yunho’s face before the other shrugged.

“Okay.”

Changmin brightened instantly and awarded Yunho with another grin. This time, the older boy couldn’t help but smile back. He usually hated company, especially if it would mean sharing his toys. Changmin was different though, his happiness was contagious.

The younger boy finally decided on the shiny ball and giggled as he reached for it, lifting it up and planting it in front of him. He began to cover the surface with handfuls of sand, only to discover that it would always slip off the sides. How frustrating!

A pout was beginning to form on his lips when he heard Yunho’s laughter in his ears. He looked to his left and found the older boy rolling around on the floor with tears in his eyes. Changmin blinked, shocked by the sudden change in mood.

“What’s so funny?” He asked innocently, cheeks turning pink as Yunho desperately gasped for air.

“You are!” The boy said between struggled breaths. “That’s not how you play with a ball!”

“Really?” Changmin stared at the foreign object like it was a great discovery. Yunho finally regained his senses but the smile stayed.

“Here, let me show you.” He said excitedly, tugging the other boy up to standing position. Changmin followed with wide eyes as Yunho kicked the ball between his feet.

“I think it’s called soccer.” The boy murmured thoughtfully as he passed the ball over to Changmin. The younger boy automatically bent down to pick it up but Yunho quickly grabbed his hands.

“You can only use your feet. That’s the rule.”

Changmin opened his mouth in a silent ‘oh’ and nodded. It was difficult to remember at first but with time, he got the hang of it. He would kick it to Yunho, who would then pass it back to him.

“Kick it as hard as you can!”

Yunho shouted and waved at him, running further and further away. Changmin mustered up all his strength and kicked, not wanting to disappoint the other. To his delight, the ball sailed over Yunho’s head and rolled down a small hill.

“I’ll get it!”

The older boy announced loudly as he raced after the moving ball. He didn’t notice the end of the grassy field. Nor did he realize the pavement slapping against his shoes.

But Changmin did.

“Yunho!”

The warning was drowned out by a blare of horns. Yunho looked up in surprised and found himself face to face with a silver SUV. Not a toy car, but a real one.

Shock rooted his feet to the floor and he momentarily forgot how to breathe. Clutching the ball tightly in his arms, Yunho squeezed his eyes shut and braced himself for the impact. But what he felt wasn’t metal colliding with his body. It was a hard shove from behind.

Yunho tumbled forwards, just out of harm’s way, and landed painfully on his hands and knees. The car screeched to a grinding halt and the driver got out, concern and worry written in her expression.

“Are you okay?” The stranger ran towards him as Yunho carefully stood up. There were only a couple of minor scrapes and the women sighed with relief.

“You shouldn’t run out like that.” She scolded lightly, kneeling down so she was matching Yunho’s height. “It’s dangerous.”

His heart was still pounding in his chest but he managed to give a weak nod. He suddenly remembered the reason he was out here in the first place and noticed his empty hands. Where was the ball?

“Be careful next time, alright?”

Yunho nodded again and bowed. “I’m sorry.”

“No, I should be the one saying sorry.” The women laughed gently as she patted Yunho’s head. “Are you here with your parents?”

Parents, no. But Yunho’s brow furrowed as he was reminded of his new friend, Changmin. Where did he go? He turned around to face a vacant field and an empty playground. Strange.

And more importantly, what happened to his ball?
