Matt came home around 11:30pm on Friday. He left again - this time driving! - around 1:45pm yesterday. :(
BUT, he'll be driving home again on Wednesday, and then we pack up and GO! We get possession of the house a week from today. It still doesn't feel real.
We lucked into this, big time. We had strictly been looking at houses on Long Island, after the one we saw in New Jersey that Matt didn't like. I, on the other hand, had actually quite liked New Jersey. There's a lot of trees, and it's very pretty. Lots of "quaint" little towns. Of course, there's also Newark, and Elizabeth that are much more urban and not the kind of place we probably want to be, but all of New Jersey often gets painted like that, and it simply isn't true.
Anyway, Matt had been looking at house after house on Long Island, and getting frustrated. Finally, one night last week I got so fed up with all of this that I started looking at New Jersey again. I came across our house on the Garden State MLS website. It turned out it had only been on the market for 4 or 5 days, and Matt got in to see it the next night after I found the listing. The landlord has lived there most of her life (adult life, I'm guessing, because it was built in 1972) and is renting it just to pay the property taxes, basically, so although we're still paying a TON by our standards, we're getting a frigging MANSION for it! There are four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a giant gourmet kitchen that deserves a much better cook than me, a dining room, living room, family room, library/den and a conservatory (or atrium, as Matt calls it) with an indoor hot tub. There's also a hot tub out by the inground pool. The entire property is on 48 acres, but we get 13 of those. My understanding is that the main part of the yard is fenced in, though, and a lot of it is forest.
I'm still having trouble believing this. We simply do not have this kind of luck. As my mother likes to say, if Matt and I didn't have bad luck, we'd have no luck at all. But so far all is going well. The lease is signed, on our end, and Matt will be giving them the cheque tomorrow.
Now to figure out how I'm going to CLEAN all that house! I think I'm going to close parts of it off from the kids, just to simplify things a bit. I want to enjoy this, while it lasts, not worry about keeping it clean all of the time!
