Fabian was tired.

He had been walking for what seemed like hours, going until he couldn't even see his mother's small, thatched-roof house. He didn't want to give up, but there didn't seem to be much else he could do. He had never been outside his village, and he didn't know where any other towns might be. In retrospect, he realized that heading into the moutains probably wasn't the wisest choice if he wanted to find people, but he had started out that way, so he didn't see the point in turning around.

Fabian sighed and sat down on a smooth rock right off the road. There was no point in continuing if he had no idea where to go, so a nap seemed just as productive as anything else.

However, before he could fall asleep, a scream split the air. He shot up from his rock and looked down the road. To his immense surprise, he saw a girl being chased by a herd of angry goats!

"Help!" she screamed, running faster than seemed humanly possible. "Help me!"

Fabian scratched his head, not at all sure what to do.

The girl saw him. "You! There on the rock! Get your ass up and help me escape these goats!"

He was surprised. "Well..." he said to himself slowly. "I'm not sure what I could do, but I suppose it would be proper to help her."

So he ducked down behind the rock and waited for the stampede to reach him. As soon as the girl was in reach, he grabbed her and pulled her behind the rock. She shrieked as she fell on top of him - but the goats kept running, too stupid to realize where their prey had gone.

Before Fabian had a chance to say anything, the girl had gotten up and brushed herself off. "Well," she said with a huff. "That was certainly an ordeal." She looked at Fabian suspiciously where he still lay on the ground. "And just who are you?"

He looked up at her, surprised at not receiving any sort of thanks. "F-fabian Ricola. I... used to live in the village in the valley back that way." He stood up awkwardly. "Um... And you are... ?"

The girl waved his question away. "That's not important. What is important is getting away from here. The goats chased me off, but I have to reach the..." She trailed off, looking at Fabian out of the corner of her eye. "Well, suffice it to say, they stopped me from reaching my destination. Now, I'm glad you could help me, but I really have to be going."

"Wait!" Fabian said loudly. She looked at him like he was stupid and he blushed, embarrassed. "Um... what I mean to say is, why can't we travel together? You need to get where you're going, and I have no idea where I'm going."

She still looked hesitant.

"I'm a really nice guy," he said. "And I'm low maintenance."

She sighed, obviously displeased. "I guess I don't have a choice. I can't have you telling anybody you met me here." She seemed to consider the idea for a few moments. Fabian stood watching her, shifting his weight from one foot to the other every few seconds. He tried to look encouraging, smiling at her rather shyly. He needed someone to lead him - and she'd work as well as anyone.

"All right," she said finally, holding out her hand. Fabian shook it soundly. "You can travel with me. But on one condition."
