Yesterday I was speaking on the phone with my mom, which is a pretty standard Nebraska-game-day ritual. After all the talk of "really, we might be able to beat USC" had subsided, out of the blue came this exchange:
Mom: "So, you'll never guess what I'm going to do tomorrow."
Me: "Oh yeah? What are you going to do tomorrow?"
Mom: "I'm going to go skydiving."
Um, yeah. My 50-year-old mother went skydiving today. Twice. Isn't that about the coolest thing ever? She's always wanted to do it--since she was a teenager, according to her. She's mentioned it several times that I can remember over the years, and just never got around to it, I guess.
Well, that all changed this weekend when a traveling troupe from Memphis (yes, you heard correctly) was camped out at the itty bitty Kearney County Municipal Airport--mainly used for crop dusters and small private planes (one of the runways is even grass). They were supposed to be taking people up Saturday and Sunday, but, in classic Nebraska fashion, the wind was too high on Saturday. Not to be deterred, my mom went out to the airport first thing this morning to get on the list. My dad and brother (who was home for the weekend from school) and a couple of my mom's friends went out to watch her.
I don't remember the last time I've heard her sound so excited. It was so incredibly cool. She had such a good time that she wanted to go again, immediately. She even convinced Wade and one of her friends to go, too. So late this afternoon they all went back up again. My mom got to control the free fall more on the second one and I guess did a bunch of wicked spins. Then once the chute was open, her and the instructor (they were requiring everyone to jump tandem) caught some thermals (?!?) and ended up staying out really long. Mom mom, talking to me about "catching some thermals" was probably about the funniest/coolest thing I've ever heard her say. She even paid extra to have video taken of her first jump (they even set it to music!) so I can NOT wait to see that.
All I did today was buy an area rug from Target. Perspective, no?
Isn't she adorable?
