The Ineptitude of Sony

Hi everybody!

Long time no see, I know, and it is my fault, sorry. So while there has been a lot going on with the industry and the law I need to make this post in which I am (sort of) late to the party. I say sort of, because I don't think a lot of people really know about what I'm going to write about: Remote Play between the PSP and PS3.

Remote Play, basically stated, is the ability to have your PS3 on your PSP anywhere with a WI-FI connection. While some features are cut out of Remote Play (like PS3 settings and DVD/Blu-Ray playback), and most games are unplayable in this form, more are going to be supported in the future. Yet, after some gamers uncovered the Remote Play feature in Lair Sony swept it under the rug. This is somewhat understandable in light of the critical reception Lair was given, but still baffling. The remake of Bionic Commando, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, has confirmed that it will be Remote Play enabled. Further, any PSOne disc in the system is available via Remote Play as well as some PSN titles such as PixelJunk Monsters. Still, Sony is pretty quiet about this feature because they haven't had the poster child game to show off the capabilities.

Even if no games were supported, Remote Play would have been enough to make me buy a PSP the day I purchased my PS3 if Sony had just told me how cool it could be, and makes the PS3 a more compelling choice. The PS3 now supports DiVX, and you can connect a hard drive of any size via USB. This means that you can turn it into a media server easily; a media server that can be accessed and enjoyed anywhere using a WI-FI connection. That means I can watch my movies, look at my pictures, and listen to my music from anywhere. That is pretty amazing. What is more is that I can turn my PS3 on and off remotely using Remote Play. This is phenomenal.

And Sony is close to silent on this! Sony is so concerned about stressing how the PS3 is a great gaming system (which it is) and not talking about the other features it has. They haven't pushed the fact that it is a Blu-Ray player (even though it helped win the format war) probably to not undercut the more expensive Sony stand alone players. Remote Play means they could legitimately market the PSP/PS3 as a location-free media player, and they haven't. I don't understand why Sony doesn't give the consumer these compelling reasons to own Sony gaming products.

Still, if they can get their message together, I think Sony will still win this hardware cycle is all said and done, because the more time I spend with it, the more excited I am about the tech.
