and in case you were wondering, Lansing is not as cool as Boston.
Places I went to that are by themselves cooler than all of Lansing:
The Silhouette Lounge - my brother's favorite bar in Allston, cool dive, big pitchers of PBR for 7 bucks. Donwside- closes at 1am and has no last call so if you end up ordering a pitcher at 12:55, a dude comes up to your table and tells you to "drink up because we're closing"
Steve's Kitchen - Cool cheap diner. Better than most diners I've been to in Lansing. They serve you coffee in a glass and you get a cup of cream if you want it.
Sam Adam's Brewery - free tour and a free 7oz glass from which you drink free beer (three varieties). It's a very unassuming building which adds to its allure.
The Old Stag Tavern - ultra cool, ultra dive. Bob the bartender wondered where my brother's lady was tonight and didn't ID me much to the shagrin of "Ponch". Do not make eye contact with Ponch or you are instantly a "cracker ass racist". Ponch could rip a bison in half. The DJ was amazing. Playing Indian music and vintage Michael Jackson (after he stopped being black, but before we would like to believe he didn't enjoy having sex with children). Occassionally, the DJ would spice things up a bit by either turning the volume up so loud you have to scream at your friends, o r just turning the music off altogether at utter random intervals. Awesome.
Jacob Wirth's - very large restaurant. Good food, primarily German cuisine. Large beer list - should have tried the Spaten Optimator, but instead had a PBR. Inept waitresses accidentally pour big pitchers of beer and give them to you. They do charge a dollar 75 though. Just remember when you're looking for the place to tell your fiance that it's by the TAM right away instead of telling her once you get to the TAM to avoid confusion.
City Hall - a.k.a the Terrordrome. Basically it's a concrete brick with a door. And I think the door just leads to more concrete.
Quincy Market - Take your East Lansings and Lansings and your Old Town Lansings throw them into a blender then dump them in the toilet because Quincy Market would mercileslly destroy them. We went to a bar there, it was the first bar my brother had been to in boston when he took a cross country odyssey years before moving to Allston. It didn't seem like anything special to me, espeically since I can't remember its name.
The Bay - Awesome. Sitting by the bay late at night talking and stuff, great times. Beautiful view.
Seals - need I say more.
If I may digress; Lansing, seriously, get yourself an aquarium and put seals in it. Seals are awesome and fun to look at. I could do it for hours. Also, work on getting yourself a bay.
The Sunset - Great food, cool atmosphere, over 200 beers on DRAFT! I really really like the Brooklyn Brown Ale by the way. If I were rich I would eat there everyday until I have tried every beer. I like beer.
Fenway - Oldsmobile Park, you are very cool and I like you. However, you pale in comparison. (Wrigley Field is still the coolest)
Top of the Hub - the top floor of the Pru (that's the Prudential building for those in the know) is a restaurant/lounge called Top of the Hub. From there you can pretty much see all of Boston - it was freaking spectacular. I drank an 11 dollar cocktail. It was delicious.
Bukowski's - Awesome divey beer bar. Over 150 styles of beer, and upon having one of each you are inducted into an elite club entitling you to a giant mug engraved with your name with which you can fill with any beer for the price of a pint. Pretty fucking sweet. I really really really like Anderson's Summer Solstice. It's delicious.
So in conclusion - Lansing, you have a lot of work to do.
