Project: South Pacific - Introduction [X-posted in

I think I've finally collected enough Asian themed décor and materials to begin my long anticipated apartment decorating frenzy. My goal is to go with a very eclectic Asian motif. By eclectic I mean I am not adhering strictly to one traditional region, style or even era. Anything that looks like something i want to look at is in here and then accented by lots of flat black and natural plants and fibers.
I'm not a decorator so much a librarian who watches HGTV on occasion so this may not be pretty. I'd suggest averting your eyes if you are under the age of eleventy-one.
Step 1: Room Divider
This first room is huge. It's 17 feet by 25 feet roughly (my 25' tape measure didn't quite reach all the way for that second measurement) and the space has been divided to accommodate my bedroom and the living room which is a common area for my room mate and I. Since the far end of the room (an additional 10 x 13.5 feet of kitchen and dining area) is adjoined to this gargantuan area, I am in desperate need of a privacy barrier of some sort.
The view from the front door
The view from the kitchen
The view from my "office"
I considered buying office partitions. Until I saw the price tag. I don't have $1800 laying about for the three I would need to span the 17 foot imaginary line into my bedroom/office. I thin thought about Japanese styled walls. Simple 2x2s and 1x1s with a bleached canvas backing secured to the walls with hinges would suit all my needs and even have some versatility. But not for my bank account. I continued to come back to the thought, “Why should I spend so much to get a natural feel.” then it struck me. I need a natural barrier. And what's more natural than going outside and bringing in some shrubbery and pretending it's a wall? Perfectly logical, I know.
So I had some more thoughts:
How fast do pine trees grow?
Can ivy live without dirt?
How much mud is in a brick?
What's the color of below?
I should sit.
People sit too much.
Some people straddle.
Don't straddle the fence.
I should make some nood.. FENCE!
And so I decide a fence-like partition would not only give me privacy but also be a fin and not too difficult project. I've built lots of fences. I'm a decent carpenter. I own tools. I even remember where those tools are located...sorta. The rest was easy. I knew chicken wire wouldn't do and bamboo came to mind next. No real thought process involved to speak of. I do apologize.
So now you know what I'm planning. I'll post each step as I tackle it. ...with pics of course because I'm all about the literacy challenged folks.
