Since this isn't a DW review, we have returned to friends-only entries.
So
professor_spork has been doing this daily duel-meme thing and I want to do it, so I'm going to do it. However, she has been doing it a daily basis for ten days now, and I have not, so I am behind. I was going to just catch up real fast, but I don't really feel the need to... so I've changed my mind mid-sentence, yes.
And yeah, these topics have all been discussed to death over the last 13 years (11 for me), but I don't mind having an excuse to talk about Harry Potter. It'll be nice to have a more accessible record of these thoughts anyways, since the only place they exist now are in lost chat histories and in the deep archives of the WB threads. And as for Doctor Who, I've talked very little in detail about the series, having been someone who spent most of their life surrounded by Americans who had never heard of it (yay being raised by dads who had the pleasure of experiencing 1970s sci-fi as ii happened).
Anyways, let's do this thing:
HP DAY 1: Your Favorite Book
Prisoner of Azkaban
After Deathly Hallows came out I reasserted my favorite order for the series, and I did publicly declare, very reluctantly and with much uncertainty, that I thought Deathly Hallows was my new favorite book, dethroning the spot that had been forever held by Prisoner of Azkaban. But I had way to many misgivings about it, an I felt like I had personally offended my copy of PoA.
You see, me and my copy go a long way back. To the very beginning in fact, when it first came out and my mom bought me the first three books. I still remember reading them all for the first time....
and I just checked the meme list and am surprised that the "how did you start reading" question isn't on the list and now I'm a little put out because i was hoping to save that story for another day, but now i have to tell or it will never be told here... gah i'm gonna take a break and come back...
The next day...
I'm back, and so this one time I wanted nothing to do with Harry Potter. I had never heard of it, and I wasn't much of a reader. I liked reader, it was cool, but I only knew one or two books that I actually liked and found interesting (they were all picture books... hmmm you think that would have been a big flag for the whole artist thing later). Essentially I never been exposed to truly good novels.
So this one time in 1999, when I was ten years old and at a Sam's club, my mom went over to a big pile of boos with the same three similar covers. She said she heard they were good, but I just wanted to get out of the store (my main goal, to this day, whenever I go grocery shopping with my mom); I brushed her off saying that she shouldn't believe everything she hears and disappeared to musical instrument department of the store to play the Star Wars theme on one of the available keyboards. I meet up with her again when she's at checkout. I'm helping her unload the cart when I notice all three of the similar-looking books from before are in the cart. I actually demanded her to put them back (foolish ten year old me! -slap-), but then she reminded me that I needed books for "Just Read," (My elementary school had this thing where you set a reading goal for the year, and were awarded medals if you made it at the end of the year. If you read the most you got pizza. This one girl always beat me to the pizza, but one year I was victorious), so I grumble grumbled and coincided. Later that night my mom said something about reading them as a family. Now for my mom, this means reading out loud in annoying voices and nobody caring and it's seriously the worst experience ever because I remember her attempting it later with Fellowship of the Ring. On both occasions I snatched the books out of her hands and ran away with them, locking myself away in my room; I'd rather read them right away by myself than suffer that torture. So I know for a fact that I locked myself away with Sorcerer's Stone that very night and began reading. No body saw me for days. Because as soon as I finished SS, I started on Chamber of Secrets, and then Prisoner of Azkaban. (NOTE: Because of this no one in my house ever experienced Harry Potter properly. My mom read it years later around the time that between the release of POA and the GOF films, but none of siblings ever did, nor did they ever get into reading. The only books they ever did read were the Twilight books, so I feel very guilty for this, but I know it wouldn't have made any difference because my mom reading HP out loud wouldn't have been the magical experience that I underwent those days I was locked away, spending my time at Hogwarts).
So POA was the first book I had to wait after. The internet wasn't a big deal yet, and the fandom was super small. I didn't know anyone else who had ever heard of Harry or Hogwarts. I still remember that time. Heck, I still remember my initial mental pictures and reactions, even eleven years later. POA was the first book that really went there too. It showed just how many levels the series could go. It made me realize that Jo was hiding clues everywhere. And when I closed that book, I was literally closing the cover of my life before HP and entering my life after HP. That series made me who I am today. I grew up with the Trio. I went to Hogwarts, and you can't go to Hogwarts without coming back changed.
So there's a certain nostalgia that will always keep POA at the top of my list. Speaking of which (number indicate time read):
1. Prisoner of Azkaban (12)
2. Deathly Hallows (3)
3. Sorcerer's Stone (14)
4. Order of the Phoenix (5)
6. Goblet of Fire (6)
5. Half-Blood Prince (4)
7. Chamber of Secrets (11)
Writing that list always makes me feel bad, because I really do love them all, and it's weird to put them at the bottom of any list.
DW DAY 1: Day 01 - Your Favorite Quote
....oh yeah that's why I was reluctant to do this meme thing. I don' feel like I have properly experience Doctor Who, due to the unusual way I experience classic. I've been slowly but surely making my way through every available and sort available-but-really-a-fan-reconstruction episode, but it's going to take me a very long time to watch it all, so I should just answer the bloody question instead of wasting a minute of your lives on this disclaimer.
SO even though I think I haven't come across my favorite quote yet, that it's hidden somewhere in classic...

Yeah, I just did that. But I feel like so much about the Doctor and his relationship with the companions is in that line (see how fast sarah Jane takes that jelly baby). And because I honestly can't think of anything else except for:
Cyberman: Our species are similar, though your design is inelegant.
Dalek Thay: Daleks have no concept of elegance!
Cyberman: This is obvious. But consider, our technologies are compatible. Cybermen plus Daleks; together, we could upgrade the universe.
Dalek Thay: You propose an alliance?
Cyberman: This is correct.
Dalek Thay: Request denied!
Cyberman: Hostile elements will be deleted. [they shoot at the Dalek, but it is unaffected]
Dalek Thay: Exterminate! [exterminates both Cybermen]
Cyber Leader: [to another Cybermen] Open visual link!
[the Cyber Leader appears on a screen in front of the other three Daleks]
Cyber Leader: Daleks, be warned. You have declared war upon the Cybermen.
Dalek Sec: This is not war. This is pest control!
Cyber Leader: We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?
Dalek Sec: Four.
Cyber Leader: You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?
Dalek Sec: We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek! You are superior in only one respect.
Cyber Leader: What is that?
Dalek Sec: You are better at dying.
