a/n I actually wrote this a long time ago so this is written with the image of Kris and Chanyeol in their 'old form' (aka Chanyeol with his cute brown hair and Kris in his blond hair yessssss)
a/n the first one who can guess the prompt gets a free hug

Yifan wakes up to the pitter-pattering sound of the rain. He looks to his side to find that the bed is empty. Somehow, the knowledge makes his surroundings feel a little bit colder than before. A shiver runs through his spine.

He sits up, runs a hand through his hair, and mumbles. It’s more of a silent prayer than anything. Though, deep inside, he doesn’t want it to happen.

“Stop the rain.”

-

Again, he wakes up to the sound of the rain. Unlike before, this time the sound is a notch louder and the sky outside is a lot darker. People’s moods would turn gloomier at times like this, but not Yifan’s. He loves rain in one way more than another. Yet, he also hates it all the same. It’s complicated, he knows, but so is life in general, and he doesn’t intend to change it even a little bit.

The bed is still empty, but it doesn’t feel cold. There is nothing particular that is different from the day before, but he can feel that there is a difference. There’s something in the air, in the surroundings, and it’s calling for him. He gets up from the bed and rushes to the living room.

The frown that had formed on his face when he woke up turns itself into a smile as he hears a distinct noise coming from the direction of the kitchen. He walks closer to find the door opened already. His smile grows wider when he sees a figure inside the small room; it’s of a tall man, a little bit shorter than himself, with short brown hair, standing in front of the stove, his back facing him. The sight is both a familiar and an unfamiliar one for him. And somehow, he finds his heart beating a little bit faster. As though it’s calling for the one in front of him.

And maybe that’s the truth.

That his heart is calling for him.

Maybe, he’s the one Yifan’s heart is beating for.

After a long minute of watching the man cooking with clumsy gestures, Yifan lets out a small chuckle. The person in front of him freezes in his motions before turning around, his shocked expression morphing into a wide and bright smile in a split second when he sees Yifan standing near the door.

“Yifan-hyung!” He leaps forward to engulf the said person into a tight hug. A pair of arms mimics the action and there they stand in a comfortable silence, save for the sizzling noise from the pan. “Oh, wait,” he pulls away, turning the stove off, and back to the warm embrace. “Now that’s more like it.”

Yifan smiles and puts his hand on top of the other’s head in order to bring him even closer. He needs this; he needs to feel the slightly shorter male clinging at him as though he’s a second skin. For it’s a reassurance that he’s here, in his arms, and not disappearing at any given second.

“I’ve missed you,” he kisses the top of the other’s head, “Chanyeol.”

They eat their breakfast with a comfortable silence around them. Their eyes are locked on each other instead of on their plates, bright smiles decorating each of their faces. Yifan feels like he had just received a blessing, for he can have Chanyeol with him, eating together with him, and actually just being able to see the other in itself is a blessing for him. He would have nothing to complain about as long as the other was with him. It was more than what he could ask for.

Yifan looks outside the window; the sky is still as dark as before, but it doesn’t feel like it in the room they were in. It doesn’t seem like they’re sitting in a room with minimal lighting due to the dark sky, instead it feels like they were sitting in a meadow with the bright sun hovering overhead. The sound of rain that would’ve irked him to no end if he were to listen to it alone somehow turns into a melodious sound like that of birds chirping, even though he knows that it’s just in his mind. With Chanyeol by his side, everything turns into something beautiful, even the things he hates the most. Just like the rain.

He had hated rain before, until Chanyeol came into his life.

He still hates rain, if Chanyeol wasn’t there with him.

He loves rain, only if Chanyeol was by his side.

He would love everything he had hated before, only because of the younger man, and for Yifan, it’s just how things goes.

A voice wakes him up from his reverie, and he blinks toward the one in front of him. The brunette chuckles sheepishly, seeming to know that Yifan wasn’t listening to what he said before. “Care for a walk?” the blonde chuckles in return, because it’s not a question; it shouldn’t be one. They always take a walk each time they’re together, and this time is no different. It’s a routine, and he enjoys it. Just like he enjoys everything because Chanyeol is there, with him.

“Let me take a shower first, okay?” Chanyeol nods as an answer, his smile rising. Yifan feels like he’s being blinded by it, and he, as crazy in love as he is, wouldn’t object if it really was to happen.

-

When Yifan walks out of the shower, Chanyeol was already waiting for him by the doorway, wearing a pair of boots and holding a red umbrella on his hand. He smiles as he sees it, walking closer to the brunette and takes the umbrella in his hand. “Where did you find it? I thought I had gotten rid of it.” His lover lets out a fake gasp and hits his arm playfully. Both of them know that the blonde wouldn’t do that. The red umbrella is a precious thing for them, as it is the silent witness of all their meetings.

He puts his boots on and takes the other’s hand in his as they heads out of the building. The rain starts to cease when they get to the front door. Yifan bites his lower lip, glancing to his side to see the worried expression on Chanyeol’s face. Taking a deep breath, he pulls the other closer and opens the red umbrella.

They walk in the direction of the subway station as though their feet were programmed to do so. It’s another routine of theirs, walking in the same direction until they feel tired and decided to just stop somewhere on the way. To actually arrive at the subway station and going anywhere further than it was a rare thing. When the rain hadn’t been pouring hard, they would go to the park and enjoy the silence because no other sane person would go there in the midst of rain; but when it was the opposite, they would go anywhere that had roof on top of it and stay there until the time was up.

“How long has it been since the last time?” Yifan finally breaks the silence that had enveloped them yet again. Silence is a normal thing for them, for they have nothing to talk about, they don’t feel the need to talk about things just to get closer to each other. They just needed to bask in the other’s presence and feel happy just because of it. People would find them weird, but they don’t think so. After all, there was nothing about them that wasn’t weird from the very start of their relationship.

Chanyeol shrugs before counting with his fingers. “Five? Six months? Eight?” he sighs and hugs the arm that is holding the umbrella for both of them. “I’ve lost count, I got sick of it.” Even without looking, Yifan knows that the other is pouting, and the realization makes him laugh. The shorter male slaps his arm to stop him from the laughing fit. “Why are you so insensitive? Remind me why I love you again.”

He smiles, patting the other’s head with his free hand. “Because I’m the one for you?” He hears a loud hmmph and holds himself back from laughing again, afraid that his lover would get mad at him for real this time. “Well, what’s important is that we’re together again right now, right? Don’t be mad at me, okay? We need to cherish the short time we have together.”

Yifan feels the other freeze for a second before nodding against his arm.

The short time, he bites his lower lip as the reality of his words finally sunk in.

-

Chanyeol tugs on his sleeve as they walk past a cafe. They stop walking, turning to face the closed door. A smile shows on the other’s face as he recognizes it as the cafe they had visited frequently before. Yifan looks at him and nods slightly, a gesture that works as a kind of permission for them to go in.

It had been a while ever since Yifan last visited the place; it was the last time he met Chanyeol, which felt like a year ago. He never steps inside when Chanyeol isn’t with him. For him, the cafe only brings great memories, and at the same time, it made him sad. It’s just like the rainy days, he thinks, it brings both great and bad things alive in my world.

They walk into the cafe, the bell on top of the door chimes softly to welcome their arrival. He closes the umbrella and puts it inside its plastic covering before walking even further in. Chanyeol is already standing in front of the counter, reading the menu that was placed on the wall across of him.

The one standing behind the counter is an unfamiliar face. He’s a silver blonde haired young man with tall height, not really shorter than Yifan himself, and he tilts his head slightly. He finds himself asking where the person who usually stood behind the counter was. But then again, it has been a long time since he went there. Surely there had been some changes that he hadn’t been aware of.

And somehow, it made him a little bit happy. At least Chanyeol isn’t the only one missing out on things. Because that is how things usually go between them, Chanyeol missing things and Yifan filling him in because the stubborn young man always wants to know every little thing that had happened while he was gone. Sometimes it could be an okay thing to do, but at times, it hurts him to do so.

Just as they are about to order, the door behind the counter opens, revealing another man wearing the same apron as the one behind the counter was. “Junhong-ah, you can- Chanyeol hyung? Yifan hyung?”

Both Chanyeol and Yifan turn their head to the newcomer, “Sehun!” the brunette exclaims, stretching his arms wide to envelop the other in a hug. The said person leans forward and hugs him despite the counter between them. “Oh my God, how are you?”

The younger smiles sheepishly and replied with a small ‘I’m great’ before looking up to face the two. “How about you guys? I’ve missed you!”

Chanyeol grins, ruffling the other’s hair lightly. “I’m great too, oh God, you’ve grown so much.” Yifan nods, agreeing that the younger really had grown a lot since the last time he saw him. He used to be a lanky tall boy with an innocent smile and lisp that would show through in his speech, and now he has a bit of muscle on his body and his face has changed a little, but the innocent smile is still in place.

“Junhong-ah, I’m sorry, can you take care of the counter for a little while longer? I have something to do.” The tall guy, Junhong, groans and bats his hand toward Sehun who keeps apologizing as he walks out from behind the counter and up to the two men. “It really has been a while since I see you guys,” he says while ushering them to the seats located in the corner of the cafe, the same place they always sit every time they were there.

Chanyeol tilts his head lightly. “Yifan too?” Sehun nods and the said man just chuckles awkwardly. The brunette shoots a questioning glare at him, which he replies by putting a finger to his lips, signaling that they’ll talk about it later.

They talk about a lot of things, how Sehun graduated from high school and entered a university well known for its arts program. “And now, I’m an Assistant Manager in this cafe.” He gestures to the cafe, a wide smile showing on his face.

Chanyeol stares at him with his mouth agape and eyes wide. His expression shows just how he felt, which Yifan identifies as both admiration and awe. It was just how his lover is, easily awed by everything. He is innocent and expressive to say the least. Yifan would never forget to tell him that it was one of the reasons he fell in love with him. Because he was his exact opposite, and opposites do attract one another.

They are talking about the small changes Sehun made in the cafe when the younger gets called by his coworker. He sighs and stands up, saying ‘I’ll be back soon’ as he walks away, leaving the couple alone.

“So,” Chanyeol smiles as he rests his chin onto the back of his propped up hands. “How are you doing, mister?”

The older chuckles and leans closer, his arms on the coffee table between them. “I’m great. A lot has happened and I became a little bit busy, which is why I don’t come here anymore,” he almost chokes on his spit because he isn’t good at telling lies, “new job, new colleagues, I had to get used to a lot of things. How about you, my little star?”

Chanyeol laughs at the nickname he used. It was a joke between them that had grown ever since the first few days they knew each other. It is true though; Chanyeol is a star, an idol that has a lot of fans and has gone to numerous countries in his world, and Yifan was proud of it.

“It’s been great for me too. Performing here and there as usual, preparing for our new album, entertaining fans,” he leans back onto the seat, winking slightly to his lover who chuckles in response. “Well, it also stressed me out at times. I mean, we just debuted less than a year ago and people are expecting so much from us. I don’t know about the others, but for me, it’s kind of burdening. Sometimes I find myself wishing to run away and live here.”

Yifan’s smile turns into a softer, yet sadder one. He intertwines his fingers together and stares at his lover. “It would be great if I can do that,” Chanyeol purses his lips together, tilting his head aside as he lowers his gaze to the older’s hands. “Moving here, living with you. I would stay at home and maybe look for some job to help pay the rent,” he chuckles. “It might be boring compared to the life I’m leading now, but at least I’ll be with you.”

A chuckle slips out of Yifan’s lips, he unclasps his hands and reaches out to stroke the other’s hair. “But then you’ll be leaving your dream behind,” he holds some strands of hair, twirling them between his fingers, “and you wouldn’t want your hard work to be in vain, would you? You’ve worked so hard for this. I don’t want you to leave it all for me.”

In all actuality, he wants to laugh at himself for being such a hypocrite. It is what he had ever wanted and more. He wants Chanyeol to leave everything behind, to choose him more than anything else. He is selfish, and he knows that. He wants to monopolize the younger all for himself. But he also knows that it would never happen. Not in a thousand years to come. Not forever.

“I know,” Chanyeol pouts, nodding slightly, “but don’t you think it would be great?”

He smiles, pinching the other’s cheek lightly. “It would,” he says as he leans back into his seat, eyes still locked on his lover. He doesn’t want to look away, as though he is afraid that Chanyeol would be gone the second he did. He wants to cherish the view of his lover in front of him.

Yifan is about to open his mouth, to change the subject to a lighter one, when someone suddenly shows up beside them, their tall height hovering over the coffee table. He looks up to find that it was Sehun’s coworker, holding a tray with two cups on top of it. “I’m sorry if I interrupted you two,” he says in a small voice, taking a cup from the tray and placing it in front of Chanyeol. “One hot vanilla latte,” he puts another cup in front of the blonde, “and one hot Americano. Sehun hyung’s treat. I hope you enjoy it.”

Chanyeol looks up and waves to Sehun, who waves back at him. Yifan follows his gesture, looking back and nodding his gratitude to the younger, before turning to say thank you to Sehun’s co-worker, Junhong if he remembers it right.

When he turns back to his lover, Chanyeol is no longer there. The only things left were the red umbrella and two steaming cups of coffee in front of him. He looks out to the window abruptly, hoping that it isn’t happening already, but it has.

The rain has stopped.
