health care

Our lab intern and I spent a minute at a traffic signal yesterday watching a local crazy lady (http://tiny.cc/s0HNi) paint even MORE conspiracy theories on her plethora of signs she sits with daily at the same intersection. I noted to our intern that, you know, I bet THAT job doesn't come with health care. And it should. They all should. Even if your job is to be the homeless guy who harasses me outside the supermarket every week, that should come with health care too. You shouldn't have to work at a big company to get your Zyprexa paid for. In reality, people who are capable of holding "real" jobs are the ones who are the most able to pay for health care, and the people who for a variety of reasons can't get jobs, the ones who would most benefit from having it. I'd like to hope that, as a country, we believe everyone has a basic right to basic medical coverage. If we don't value even the least among us, we might as well start going all soylent green on each other, until we whittle the population down to a more affordable level, or at least until we get rid of, you know, whomever it is the society at large can agree on aren't worth supporting. (Who would hopefully also be the tastiest.)

I'm not saying I'm for it, but if there were less people around, probably the coral reefs, the rainforests, the polar bears, the spotted owls, and the giant pandas wouldn't mind much.

Of course even then, the people left would be all the rich, elitist, well-armed assholes. I'm thinking on the whole, the expansion of health care is a better idea.
